I’m using Photoshop CS and want to save a slice as a GIF file. So I go to "Save for the Web" and choose gif and click save, but the next window that comes up only allows me to save as .jpg files (slices), not gif.

So how can I save a slice as a gif without having to move it to its own document (so it’s not a slice)?

SFW will save multiple slices from an image in its folder (Image) as whatever format you assigned to each slice. Try it.

I did try that, but it saves only the "first" selected slice as a .gif . . . the others are saved as .jpg files. I assume this is because .jpg is the only option available in the dropdown box in the save as dialog.

Hey, ummm…Brandon.

Have you noticed that the advertising in your first post was removed?

There’s a reason for that: It’s frowned upon, and against the T.O.S. of these forums.

Sooo, you might want to turn that off in your newsreader before you post here.

That’s not how it works for me. In SFW you can select each slice with the slice tool and choose gif from the dropdown. Or Shift Select them all and when you save choose All Slices and it should save them as whatever you choose.

I’ve been posting in tech forums for years and never had anyone mention that .. . . most of the people that I see post include some sort of links (even if unrelated) to their sites. I wasn’t posting to advertise . . . I was posting with a question . . . the "advertising" is just a tack on that is prevalent in a lot of forums.

I thought that’s how it used to work for me as well . . . I did select multiple slices, chose gif, but then the next save as dialog box only allows for .jpg files. Oh well. Thanks for your help.

You have to set it in the dropdown in the Save for Web dialog.

The only option is .jpg (images only).

If you select ALL the slices in the SFW dialog, and choose GIF as your format, you should be given a GIF in the Save dialog. You must have all the slices selected and optimized as GIF. Otherwise you may have a JPG choice. But regardless, in the Image folder, it will have the sliced images saved in the format you choose in the SWF dialog.

I’m still not given a gif option even if I choose select all slices. I’m stumped.

Sol, in the Save for Web dialog (NOT in Save) you cannot get gif in the dropdown?

I get .gif in the SFW dialog . . . but NOT in the next Save box. I only see options like HTML and Images, Images Only (.jpg) and HTML . . . no .gif option.

I would consider trashing Preferences if you haven’t already. I do seem to remember this being an issue in XP (wrong extensions) but I’ve never encountered it.

That may be why I’m not seeing it.
However Brandon, you say even if you SFW multiple slices as GIF, Save as xxx.jpg , the slices are NOT saved as GIF files in the resulting Image Folder?

I get .gif in the SFW dialog . . . but NOT in the next Save box.

What is the mode of the image. If it is a 16 bit image, it won’t go to GIF. In older versions, you also had to change to Indexed image mode.

Save for Web in CS doesn’t care what the bit depth or color mode is. Should work regardless. I think it’s an OS issue.

EDIT: See this thread and others about this probblem <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc1e5f6/0>
