I have several noisy scans from the same transparency. When the image layers are all aligned in register and equally blended, the resultant composite layer is much cleaner than any single original scan.
But this first attempt at noise reduction could be made much better than simple averaging. If the median pixel value in the stack of layers could be calculated, pixels of excess variance could be masked. Only good pixels would be blended. Are there blend modes and other commands to build and action for such a median filter to operate on several layers?
