Hi there,

I’ve got a bit of an unusual problem and I’m hoping someone else on the forum might have had had a similar experience or work around to solve it.

I’ve sent a PS CS2 PSD file to a printer for a DVD print but the file is opening as flattened artwork in his version of Photoshop.

It turns out it’s version 7, so I can understand that this might not work but there doesn’t seem to be a way to save a backward compatible version of the layered file that will open in Photoshop 7.

I’ve also tried sending the separate layers as tif files but this time the tifs are opening without the transparency. I’ve tried different settings for the tif export but nothing is working.

As a last resort I’m suggesting he downloads a trial version of CS3 but this won’t be a lasting solution once the trial runs out.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jamie

Have you saved with file compatibility Maximized (Preferences)? A layered CS2 file should be openable in 7, with the proviso that features not found in 7 won’t work and you need to have the same fonts on both machines if there is type involved.

How are the files being transferred?

Hi Ed,

It’s being saved with Compatibilty Maximized yes.

There is type in the file, myriad (if my memory serves me right this was included with Photoshop 7)

Thinking about it actually the type is displayed along a path – a circle which goes round the disc. Putting type on a path wouldn’t be something you could do with PS 7 would it?

Even still the tifs I have sent open with no transparency.

I’ll rasterize the type and send that file to see if it opens okay.

I was sure, like you say that a psd file was backwards compatible if it didn’t use new features which the old version had.

"How are the files being transferred?" The files are being transfered www.yousendit.com – recomended by the printer.

Thanks for your input. I’ll see if rasterizing the path type will work.

Cheers,

Jamie

Is the machine receiving the files updated to 7.0.1?

Have you tried zipping the files?

Do you mean zip compression when exporting to tif or zipping the actual files?

I had crossed my mind that www.yousendit.com might have been altering the file but surely that wouldn’t be the case?

The reason we’re using this site is there’s a deadline for tomorrow to have the stuff printed.

Save it as a non-layered PDF and be done with it.

"Save it as a non-layered PDF and be done with it." – That’s where this all started but for whatever reason the PDF was not acceptable.

Assuming that the file was saved correctly, I think you may be in the market for a new printer.

I meant actually archiving it in a zip file. That way if the transfer is farkling the file in some way, it should be protected.

Will try that, Thanks Ed.

What Bob said. If the printer can’t deal with a PDF its time to find a new one.

I don’t believe PS 7 can open layered PDF files preserving the layers, if memory serves. The question is, why is the printer using outmoded software?
