Toggle the dialog of the Save As portion of the action to OFF. In the Batch Dialog, make sure to check the box that says "Override Save As Information".

Here’s a "more automated" method if you’re looking for one. Using this approach you can use predefined "default folders" for a one-click approach or easily override them.

Prep:
* Populate \source with a few test image files

Record a new action (name it what you like):
* First step: Automate > Batch
* Specify action, \source, \destination and (x) Override action… as usual * Specify File Naming if you like
* Click OK to proceed. When all test files are processed, PS will record a "Batch" command in the action
* STOP recording

If you have checked the inside embossed square corresponding to the Batch command when you play this new action, the Batch dialog will be displayed allowing one to make modifications to \source and/or \destination. If the inside embossed square is unchecked, PS will batch process the files in the default folders without interruption.

There is an override in Source and Destination: Over ride Open and Override Save As. When I did the last set I used the 8 bit conversion Action which has 2 steps only:

Convert Mode>Depth 8 and
Open F:\Edit\xxxxxx

That’s all. So I go to Batch Set the Action, specify a file that is different from the file in the Action. This Action has no save, so I specify where to save and do no name change. Neither override is checked.

So what happens is that the first image in the file specified in the Action opens and converts but sits there on screen. Subsequent images from the folder specified in Batch open, convert and save to the Batch specified folder. The first image goes nowhere, I simply close it from the PS workspace.

Weird, but it works.

I’m going to write a simpler one. "Convert Mode>8 bit" and stop.

If you change file formats, e.g., .psd to .tif, the action requires File > Save as… (format=whatever you’re converting to). If the original format is being retained, then a File > Save as… is not required.

When no format change is needed and File > Save as… is not part of action, turning on option Override action ‘save as’… results in no files written to \destination.

I assumed all along there was no Open command in your action. Unless there are special requirements, an Open in an action invoked in batch is frequently a source of problems.

Glad you’re over the hump.
