Hi All,

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to convert a selection of any shape to a slice, so i can optimize save for the web.

The problem is i am trying to save my image without a background. The image is a button i created, and i am trying to get only the pixels in the button itself, but a bit of white background is always added so that the image can be saved in a rectangular shape.

I am using photoshop cs3 extended on windows xp

Thanks in advance for your advice.

what format are you saving in? For transparent background you need to use gif or png*. Be sure to choose a matte color that same or similar to your web background.

*png can be a problem in Internet Explorer versions before IE 7.

No, because slices must be rectangles and selections can be any shape.

Ah, a different problem entirely. I tend to save buttons in GIF format which allows transparency. The trick is to have transparency in the original image.

1. Start with a normal file in the size you want.
2. Rename background layer to another name (layer 0). It will now have a checkerboard background, which means it is transparent.
3. Create your button on additional layers.
4. Use Save for Web, and the Gif option, making sure the transparency box is checked. Note the Matte color box. This should be close to the color your background will be, or you will get a halo of white around the shape (look up anti-aliasing in help for more if you want).

If you have trouble with any of these steps, help should clear them up.
