Is there a way to change the background color of the document window? When scanning in white documents it would be easier if the background could be changed to a shade of gray or other color to increase contrast so as to aid the process of cropping the image.

If you mean the area surrounding the image when the image window is maximized, you pick your desired color in the color picker window, then use the paint bucket tool and shift-click in the image canopy – the area outside the image.

Thomas, there are sort of two backgrounds. When you first open up Photoshop, without an image, there is a background there. That can be changed by right clicking on the desktop, choosing properties, appearance and advanced. Select 3D objects from the pull down menu and change the color to what you want.

The second background color is that one around your image when you choose a small magnification for your image. To fill this, select the paint bucket tool, located beneath the gradient tool in the tool bar. Choose the foreground color you want by clicking on the foreground swatch in the tool bar. Hold the shift key down and click with the paint bucket on the area around your image.

Do you mean this background:
< http://home18.inet.tele.dk/madsen/photoshop/document_backgro und.png> ? If you do then choose the color you want as the foreground color and click on the document background with the Paint Bucket Tool selected and the Shift key pressed down.

If you mean this background:
< http://home18.inet.tele.dk/madsen/photoshop/program_backgrou nd.png> – then it’s controlled by Windows. (In WinXP it’s Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Advanced > Application background).
