All three images were sketched at the same speed motion etc…..only Photoshop is wobbly and have sketched for years so it’s not skakey hands to blame etc…..at slower speed in Photoshop the results are more wobbly…..Just got feedback from Wacom and they say it’s a Photoshop problem?

Hi Rob indeed I did read your post the CINTIQ 21UX is the tablet and monitor in one so I can’t move it away from the monitor as it is the monitor….as you can see by the link below something is going on with Photoshop….(Painter and Sketchbook are fine)..I had an Intuos before and never had any line quality issues until I just got my new Cintiq setup……there seems to be a few people out there with the same issue with the CINTIQs and Photoshop just looking to find some answers….Cheers Mike

I also just got a Cintiq a few days ago and have noticed some issues in Photoshop regarding line quality…
Creativeboy have you noticed that if you flip the pen around to the eraser tip that the photoshop quality improves, I’ve got improved lines when erasing, but as soon as I flip it back over to the other side the poor line quality continues. This leads me to believe there is some kind of issue with the photoshop brushes maybe.. not sure, never had a brush issue before lol

Hi Scott…..just did a quick check on Photoshop and not really getting any better line quality by flipping the pen and using the eraser…… I never had an issue before with Photoshop either with my old Intuos tablet which I’ve had and used for almost 9 years……
Found a few more people who are having the same issue with Photoshop and their Cintiq 21UX…….do you use Painter or Sketchbook pro (or another drawing program) at all….is the line quality good in them on your Mac…

Hey Mike… Yeah I never had a problem with my Intuos either, this is getting a little frustrating now lol.
I’ve got Painter and the line quality is great in it, Sketchbook currently doesn’t work too well on Intel macs, otherwise I’d have it too.

I’d definitely file an official bug report with Adobe about this, with a link provided to the DeviantArt page. That composite clearly shows there’s a difference in stroke behavior. As long as you’re sure you’ve eliminated stroke attributes as a cause, this is something that really should be fixed.
there’s something to his suggestion to trying another computer. also maybe a different version of photoshop if you have access to one.
have you played with all the settings in the brushes?
tried to reset the photoshop preferences (sorry, i’ve been kinda half following, not sure if you mentioned this already.)

I’ve tried it on three different macs, one G5, two Mac Pro’s (a quad and 8-core). As well as CS2 and CS3 varying between the three different macs, throughout all of them, the poor line quality has stayed the same.
I spent a good hour fiddling with brush settings changing everything I could think of to correct the issue, but so far, nothing.

Looks like wacom wasn’t much help… even more frustrating. I totally hear you about using photoshop the majority of the time. It’s all I use essentially. Granted the application wasn’t technically designed with tablets in mind compared to Sketchbook or Painter, but I still don’t see why we can’t come up with a solution either through Wacom or Adobe.
is ANYONE working correctly with this tablet and photoshop?
I’ve also noticed that when I’m zoomed in (200%) the line quality does improve, it’s still not perfect compared to Painter, but it is a definite improvement. However inking at 200% isn’t really a viable option.
so it seems to be a mapping or tracking problem? it sure sounds like the wacom driver. you have no problems using a standard mouse, i suppose.

* Have also heard from other people with Cintiq having the same issues with Photoshop
* As much as I can tell the mouse looks okay
I think it’s a Wacom Cintiq Driver issue as my previous Intuos tablet etc I never had a problem with.

This question may be redundant but when you "played around with the brush settings" did you actually reset everything* from the drop-down menu in the Brushes Palette?

wow this is interesting. I just purchased the new 12" Cintiq. I do a lot of inking in Illustrator (which works great yet of course Illustrator has smoothing options). My lines look bad in Photoshop which worked fine with my old ArtZ.
I am having the same jagged lines problem too. I had a graphire and just ordered an Intuos 3 9×12, got it today, and was hoping this would have fixed the jaggedy lines. I am guessing it’s a photoshop problem then. I also tried Painter and the lines are definitely smoother there.
I do a lot of line work and I’ve had this same problem with Photoshop ever since I purchased my Intuos3 6×8, and only used Photoshop for coloring. Other applications such as Deleter and free ones like Sai Paint Tool actually feature a ‘trembly hands correction’ function for extra sensitive tablets and for those with the shakiest of hands. I’d always believed the cause was that such a feature was never implemented into Photoshop, but then some here say they’ve been able to get smooth lines with their previous tablets.
Actually checking the box for "Smoothing" in the brushes palette worked for me. Yay 🙂
Hmm haven’t posted on here in a while – my situation regarding this hasn’t changed either – my attempt to work it out with adobe themselves ended in a ridiculously pathetic manner despite weeks of following their directions and sending them a lot of examples and talking with them for hours on the phone… @_@; they just told me it was natural and normal and exactly how PS was supposed to work!
I honestly hope they have listened to the many people who complained about this (and if you haven’t already – please do your bit by complaining directly to Adobe – they’ll only take notice if a large percentage of users tell them!)
Anyway… I gotta stop now or I’ll just get so mad it won’t be good for me… grrrrraaargggg!!!!!! too late!!! I’ve turned into the HULK…

Cintiq 21UX the line problem is screen resolution, on the mac pro you have to use the dvi-d adapter to the dual dvi card otherwise the system won’t recognise it and default the resolution to somthing like 863 x 10 somthing instead of 1600 x 1200. FYI the monitor flip when using 2 monitors can be programed via Functions to one of the 8 buttons. I didn’t see this info on any sites. Good luck…

Nope not yet I’m afraid – and I’m too busy working now to keep trying to get it into Adobe’s head that this IS a problem that should be fixed – for goodness sake they managed to exactly replicate the issue when I opened a web-case with them before! How much more reason do they need to at least give us a little more smoothing for our brushes, so we don’t look like we have the shakes constantly! They took months of my time and effort and then Adobe tech tell me: ‘that’s the way it’s supposed to work’… <_< errr… …ok I’ll stop now before i get any more annoyed!

For the Mac users who have been keeping an eye on this thread, I recently gave the CS4 beta a test run on a Mac Pro 8-core Intel machine running Leopard w/Cintiq 21UX and the shaky brush problem has been fixed. Just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things, I ran CS3 on the same machine and the wobbly lines were still there.
There’s a Photoshop CS4 beta!? where? Sounds awesome though – looking forward to checkin it out myself 🙂

Im a car designer working for GM. I have experienced the same problem with the lines not being smooth in Photoshop.
I work with a Cintiq 21UX and Photoshop CS2.
Sketchbook pro seems to be fine.
Im really frustrated with this. It would be nice of Adobe and Wacom to look at this issue seriously.

Good news just tried the Photoshop CS4 upgrade on both XP and VISTA computers and line quality is smooth ;-)…..Finally……a very big thanks probably goes out to Greg Clifton….I think somebody did listen…..Cheers all…..

Hey all – I downloaded the photoshop CS4 trial (too skint for upgrade just yet!)
and you should see the grin on my face when using the brush tool now – smoooooooooth! (just be sure to turn off vertical sync under prefs/performance/GPU settings/advanced… or you’re likely to have uber-lag) 🙂 I also downloaded the AI trial and seeing intelligent tweaks and changes in both applications that just make sense!
I think finally this may be an upgrade that’s going to make a difference to my workflow in a good way! (when I can get the workspace back as it should be – lol!)
