Crew…

Having a horrific problem w/ Text in Photoshop (CS3). If I create a text bounding box (by clicking on the Text button & drawing a box…any size box…on the screen)…the Cursor flashes at a point way above the bounding box; & of course the text is inserted at that high position, as well.

The cursor itself is also having a problem…it’s a heck of a lot longer (higher) than the selected font size, which wouldn’t be a problem in-and-of-itself…but…when working w/ previously typed text…if I’m lucky enough to position the cursor correctly within that text…& then select (some text)…because the cursor is so big…it selects two lines of text, instead of one (the one the cursor was placed within).

What in the heck is going on ??? I’m new to CS3…but CS3 shouldn’t be functioning like this, should it? Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong w/ the text function, please?

Thanks very much,

Look at your Character Palette after you draw out your text box.

I’m going to guess that your setting for "Baseline shift" is a high, positive value. Reset it to zero.

You’re welcome.
There’s one more thing for you to know if you’re confronted with a "Tall Text Cursor" that doesn’t match your font’s point size, and you’ve double-checked that your baseline shift is set to "0".

That is:
Older fonts that were made by Letraset often show a giant text cursor that doesn’t seem right. Apparently, when they made them, they didn’t adhere to the conventions for construction as most of the other font houses. It has to do with the invisible box that bounds each character in the font development program. I don’t know enough about the small details of why they deviated from the norm, but just know that if you ever run across this, you’re not going nuts, or have something weird going on with Photoshop or your system. The fonts work fine, they just cause that extra-tall cursor to display.

Also, be aware that some freelance font designers who make fonts for a hobby might also cause the tall text cursor syndrome as well. It’s just a matter of them not optimizing their work in the font-creation app before they compile and export their design as an actual font.
