I have an image with one layer. I want to make all the white parts of the image gray. How do I do this?

The lower slider in the Levels dialog affects output. You can use that to reduce white to grays, compressing the original dynamics.

If you want to target only the grays, use Select > Color Range or make a mask (here you have a vast number of options).

I recommend using a mask as the levels will effect the entire image without the mask.

Method # 42b:

Adjustment Layer—>Selective color…

Choose White from the drop down menu and move the Black slider.

Keeps things editable.

You know thats the first time I tried selective color. The method has to be set to absolute for it to effect the white though.
