I have an image and want to create a silhouette from it. Similar to when you see a face — you cannot tell who the person is but you can tell its a man or woman just by looking at the outline/silhouette.

What is the process for doing so?

Thanks … Carl

Create a selection around the object, and fill with black (or any other color).

You might even create a new layer after you make your selection so that you can fill it with black, but not permanently obliterate the original image.

Is that enough, or would you like a primer on the step-by-step use of Photoshop’s basic tools and functions?

Yes please – a primer on the step-by-step for this process.

Many thanks.

No offense, but we really don’t do much of that sort of thing in these forums. Not because we’re stubborn or secretive or snobbishly above helping out users with less experience, but because this place kind of assumes that visitors will have done some of their own beginning homework.

If, for example, you had posted a more informed question, such as:"I want to make a silhouette from a person in an image, but can’t seem to manage accurately selecting around their hair…What methods should I use for this?"…well, in that case, we could at least assume you have enough partial familiarity with the application so that we wouldn’t have to explain *every* *little* *detail*, down to and including the proper names of tools and functions, and which icons to click on.

There are literally thousands of independently created websites which are dedicated to helping new users learn the basic ins-and-outs of Photoshop’s tools and functions, and most here would recommend that you explore those, along with the Help Files. There’s also no real substitute for just abandoning any trepidation you may have and jumping into the application’s interface, trying and exploring EVERY tool, EVERY icon, EVERY menu, just to see what they do. You’re going to make mistakes. Every single user of Photoshop has made an uncoutable number of them. But that’s part of the learning process, and part of the fun.

Also, remember that at this period of your learning process, Google will become one of your best friends. If you enter search terms in the following format:photoshop tip|tutorial|technique silhouette…and plug in any term or effect or technique (where you see "silhouette" above) you wish to learn about, Google will return just about all the educational resources any user should need. When that doesn’t work, you should think about joining the forums associated with many of those independent websites.

And when the people at THOSE forums can’t answer your questions, that’s when this place will come to your rescue.

I appreciate the comment from the last reply — however and with all due to respect to you — the last person did offer — therefore, I do not see why you would negate his offer with your comments.

If that person did not see a need to offer "would you like a primer …" they would not have offered.

I am surprise that someone else can jump in like this — with no cause!

This is meant to be forum for exchange NOT for shutting people out!

"the last person did offer — therefore, I do not see why you would negate his offer with your comments."

Pay attention to who posted each of the replies to your questions.

That’s your first task: Learn to pay attention to the details, for that’s where the devil—and the glory—reside.

My opinion, with 30 seconds delay:

And why the heck, Phos…, did you offer this service ?

"Is that enough, or would you like a primer on the
step-by-step use of Photoshop’s basic tools and functions?"

It’s fairly simple, for a silhouette, which looks like
cut by a scissor:

Use the polygonal lasso for the selection of the face.
Close the path where the small circle apppears.
Fill the selection by black. Invert the selection and fill by white. Save As…

Some people don’t people understand irony.

But I thought Phos was asking for trouble with his "offer" – the way it was phrased – and bearing in mind that not all posters are native English speakers.

"And why the heck, Phos…, did you offer this service ? "

Because *YOU* didn’t, you old DeutschGeezer you. XD

The point I was making—which was to describe how the culture of these forums has developed, and that these forums haven’t really been the place to teach super-basic techniques. Not for a LOOOONNNNNG time, going back to the old AOL and Compuserve days over 15 years ago.

There are MUCH better, more efficient places to learn those things. Sites with tutorials already created and formatted, with pictures and descriptions and with far more detailed instructions.

And I don’t care who you are or where you’re coming from, finding and operating the lasso tool is Kindergarten Photoshop.

And as for the suggestion you’ve offered: How can you be sure the O.P. knows HOW to fill a section with a color? If they have to ask about how to make a simple selection as you’ve described, I, for one, wouldn’t go by that to assume they know how to fill that seletion with a color. Also, without being more expansive with your instructions, what you have just done is explained how to PERMANENTLY ruin an image. You haven’t qualified your instructions with a way to avoid this, and THAT is a more egregious sin than my explanation of why I answered the way I did.

When your posts are complete and without fault or omission, then I’ll accept your busting my ass. Until then, you can point your old bony finger at someone else.

I appreciate all the guidance. Like most feedback, I was able to pick a little from each reply and create an outcome.

Thanks to those who offered guidance.
