It will be the full version. Be sure to have him register it, so that he qualifies for the upgrade to CS4 coming out next month.
The only issue with the ‘student’ edition is that it cannot be used for commercial work. However, if he upgrades to a newer license later, the restriction is lifted. The student version is sold through the school.
If he buys the slightly more expensive ‘education’ version (still cheaper than retail), he can use that version immediately for commercial work. The education version is sold through places like journeyed.com and creationengine.com
The Student edition is not the same as the "Educational" or "Academic" pricing version. The Educational or Academic version is OK for commercial work, but it has a significant cost, although much lower than the regular version. The student edition is much cheaper, but doesn’t permit commercial work.

I stand corrected … my comments were based on the educational edition, not the newer student edition.
Don, in the grand scheme there may not be anything to be corrected. One may have the ideal situation if they can purchase the insanely cheap CS3 student edition (non-commercial) immediately and qualify for a free CS4 upgrade (which would bump one to a commercial license). That’s a winning deal if it could be confirmed with an Adobe sales rep.

The student edition is lower than the educational edition, and is only offered at schools that apply for it. I didn’t read all the details, but I think it was primarily for graphic design students/programs.
Since I’m staff and not student I’ve never searched at Studica to see if they have that special edition… but for "regular" education editions, they are the lowest of the dozen or so places I’ve found (which is NOT to say that I’ve found every online education version vendor)
