Hi,

when I start CS3 the startup stops and I get this message: “The folder specified for temporary files is not available. The default folder will be used. “
After I click OK, the startup resumes.

I have tried scratch disk (turning it on and off), but this does not seem to help. Also, I cannot find this folder (where is it, ore where should it be?).

Can somebody help me please?

Thank you.

Matthew.

The default temp folder is C:/Documents and Settings/Matthew/Local Settings/Temp. Since it is a system folder, it will be hidden by default, so make sure to adjust your Explorer view settings. Check whether you have sufficient user priviliges for the folder and/or whether you are member of a qualified user group (users, power users, administrators).

Thank you Mylenium.
That is the default temp folder. But where can I find this specified folder, that seems not to be available?
I’m wondering if it would be possible to create that folder and assign it to CS3.

One of your system variables may not be set correctly. Right-click on "My Computer", then choose "Properties". On the "Advanced" tab, select the "Environment variables" and check whether your user-specific variable set includes the mentioned directory. There should be nothing else to do, as this is a system automatism. Maybe someone else has another idea, where it goes wrong.

Thank you very much Mylenium.

First, I must admit I’m not that deep into Windows (so I’m not very good at it). The “Environment variables” show 2 folders:
TEMP C:/Documents and Settings/Matthew/Local Settings/Temp. (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp) + TMP (without the (“E”): C:/Documents and Settings/Matthew/Local Settings/Temp. (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp).

However actually on C I have:
C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Local Settings/Temp + C:/Documents and Settings/Matthew/Local Settings/Temp.

Now I am Matthew and the Administrator as well (we have the same rights) and I automatically log in as Matthew.
So would you say it could be an option if I created a new folder in “Environment variables” C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Local Settings/Temp?

Thank you,
Matthew.

Matthew,

I can only say that I have the same question as you and am waiting for someone to help us.

Hi Brain,

last night, by sheer coincidence, I found it and I wanted to post the (my) solution this morning. However, I’m not sure it will be the answer to your problem.

The problem on my pc was NOT related to Photoshop but to another program: the Webroot Window Washer.
On my old computer I occasionally used this program to clean up old and useless stuff and I installed this program on my new computer.
However, I overlooked the setting for XP Pro SP3 .
Under “Windows System”, you can select to wash the “Windows Temp Folder” and the “System Temp Folder”. Standard both folders are set to be washed. And that was the (my) problem.

The System Temp Folder can be washed. No problem.
However, the Windows Temp Folder should NOT be washed.
Photoshop assigns this folder and puts some files in it. If this folder is washed, these files will be deleted and you will get this error after every wash. By clicking OK during Photoshop start up, the folder is assigned again and Photoshop will put new files in this folder.

However, what hat I also overlooked was that the program was set to automatically wash at Windows shut down.
So every time I shut down my pc this folder was washed and when I started up my pc again and started PS, I got this error. So by simply changing the settings on the Window Washer, the (my) problem is solved.
O boy, how stupid of me! My computer is brand new, I installed about 25 programs on it and just overlooked these 2 simple settings!

I hope this may be of any help for people who have the same problem and this Window Washer installed.

BTW, Windows Washer also has a special Photoshop setting (under “Custom Wash Items”). Do NOT use it! It will delete all your settings and preferences (Now, that one I did not overlook.)

Regards,

Matthew.
