I work in a media service center and many of my clients give me JPEG’s to make into large posters/images. I hate those JPEG’s and I’ve tried several ways to remove those squirreling squares. One of the ways I do is to blur the images. Are there any other ways? Those customers usually don’t have the original images and expect me to work miracles on tiny JPEG’s, even if I tell them not to expect a perfect image. I work for the military and they expect quick turnouts.

Read up on resolutions and jpegs, print up a couple of sample enlarging/reducing sample pages and then show the idjits WHY the picture will look like crap going from 1"x1" at 72dpi to 5"x7" at print value 150dpi…Visual aids won’t get rid of all your headaches, but it WILL help educate the stumps to where you MAY get better images, but at least won’t be blamed for the "garbage in, garbage out" results.

Rebecca,

Ol’ Whozit’s advice to get your clients to provide higher quality JPEGs is the best course of action. In the meantime, I suggest you try ABSoft’s Neat Image program. Among other things, it has the ability to reduce JPEG artifacts. They have a free Demo version. For more info about Neat Image see:

You can download a Neat Image demo at the following URL. I suggest you avoid the mirror sites and click on the "flower icon" to the upper right.

You may also want to try these free actions: <http://www.2morrow.dk/75ppi/coolpix/actions/>

The base de-noise deluxe is quite effective for removal of jpeg artifacts, and it´s a one-click process.

Thanks for the tips–I think I have heard of software to fix the squirreling lines in digital pix’s. I’ll ask my boss if we can purchase some software. I was thinking of using what we have in PhotoShop 7. I figured out using the blur filter, but that doesn’t achieve all what I have in mind. I’m gonna try out other ways since those idiots have absolutely no clue and I’ve got to help those poor tortured souls.

Mathias Vejerslev’s work looks commendable, and well documented. In his HTML, the first word this line might be a typo:

A____ the finished result from 100% or greater zoom, or by checking individual colour channels.
