Having just updated Adobe Master Collection CS4 there were several incomplete install issues. What is of most concern is that Photoshop crashed when attempting to open an existing PSD file, with a message indicating that the "Version Cue.DLL" could not be found.
Upon navigating to the location where it should have been, I noticed that the searched for folder (4.0.1) under which the DLL file is located was missing, only the older (4.0.0) was there. I took a chance and renamed this file to 4.0.1 and PhotoShop loaded the PSD file.
Obviously, I am concerned as there are a number of modules that did not update correctly and I’m wondering how much damage this latest update has caused…!
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Cheers
Michael

let me rephrase, there have been no updates for photoshop CS4 yet.

Camera RAW updates are not Photoshop updates they are Camera RAW updates.

You’re correct, PhotoShop CS4 has no updates as of yet.
However, the updates for other programs within the Master Collection CS4 appear to have caused PhotoShop to look for the latest version of VersionCue.dll (which is located in a folder denoted …\4.0.1\…). In my case this did reside under –
C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe VersionCue CS4\Client\4.0.0\VersionCue.Dll I renamed the last folder to reflect the upgraded one (4.0.1) and got PS to open files again, but wonder if this is (or will be) causing problems with other modules.
As stated earlier, PS exited after notifying that "the specified module could not be found" and thankfully provided the complete path.
Hopefully someone from Adobe is reading this, but I will contact them. Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the post. Did you get the updates from the Adobe Updater? Do you know what products had updates?

Was this on XP or Vista?

Thanks again!

Hi
Yes, there were (still are) 5 updates available, approximately 128 MB. The ones that did not install were as follows:
Lang Pack (English) for Device Central 2.1
Adobe Flash Light 3.1
Device Central CS4
Adobe Media Encoder CS4, Exporter 1.01
Adobe CSI CS4 1.0.1, Adobe Drive CS4 1.0.1, Adobe CSI CS4 x64 1.0.1 Adobe VersionCue CS4 Server 4.0.1
That’s the latest as of yesterday.
Just now I decided to save the updater files without installing them and they consist of the following folders:
Cameraw5
creativeservicesinfrastructure1
devicecentral2
mediaencoder5
versioncuserver4

Hoping this is of help?
Cheers

Thanks for the info!

So is this on Vista64 then? I see that Premiere Pro, and Encore have also released updates.

Do you run with UAC turned on?

Hi Steve
Yes this is a Vista x64 system with 8Gb of ram, 2 Raptor HDs, 4 Hds configured as RAID 5 and the video card is NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS with the latest drivers installed.
Also, UAC is turned off.
Something that was not mentioned before is that Camera RAW 5.2 also did not install in either the 32 and 64 bit versions.
More on camera RAW, when I first installed all the modules I was able to see and work with RAW files in Bridge. However, after the first update Bridge would not recognize the RAW (NEF) files. I had to download said files and manually install them. Looks like I have to do this again 🙂
Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not complaining, but am concerned. If you wish you can contact me at
Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael,

I have your email if you want to edit the last post, and remove it now.

I don’t have any insight to the various updates that were rolled out, or trouble shooting to help you out, but I have forwarded this on to our tech support. It sounds like you have things working, but I’m sure you want to know how to get the other failed components installed.

Regards,
steve

I have this same problem. It is on a fresh install of Vista Ultimate 64. I installed all windows updates, installed all hardware drivers, installed LR 2.1, installed Photoshope CS3 and ran the update–no problems.

I installed Photoshop CS4 Extended and executed Help->Updates and it came up with the same 5 updates shown above. All 5 updates failed. On several of them Windows reported that Adove setup had failed–several times. There are errors in the Windows Event Log relating to this.

Adam Jerugim has all of my info (I’ve been doing some testing for him on another issue) so I won’t publically post my email address. If anyone wantes the Event Log entries of the failure or any other info I might posess they get in touch with me through Adam.

I was able to manually install Camera Raw 5.2 and I have a laptop that is also running Vista Ultimate 64 and the only update that failed there was Camera Raw 5.2–the other 4 installed correctly so I was able to copy the Version Cue 4.0.1 folder from that system to my desktop and both the 32 and 64 bit versions of PS CS4 are running. However, I still have whatever might remain from the failed installs so I am not comfortable the system will be stable.

I just updated my Master Collection without any problems. I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit. I used the updater in Bridge.

I’ve got the same issue as Michael. Like him, got things working, apparently without problem, by renaming "\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.0" to "…\4.0.1".

But Adobe Updater fails for several components, and like Michael, I’m not that keen on having hacked the directory name like this.

OS is Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Any updates on this updater glitch?

Hello, am having same problem. Every time I restart, my desktop is locked. I can still get into programs, but I cannot right click on desktop to restore mt background, I cannot w/o getting error "versioncue.dll 4.0.1 for CS4 is missing or corrupt. There is a folder called "directories" and below it a "4.0.0" in CS3, but in CS4, there is a folder called "directories" and NO 4.0.1 below it. If I try to rename it goes back to missing file ".dll". How can I fix it PLEASE HELP… Very new at this…

Thanks Teddy

I am new to vista so I am not quite sure why I have two program files but this was my fix.

I could not open Illustrator CS4 without getting this error and then the program would close. I found that 4.0.1 had installed in the Program Files so I moved it to Program Files(x86) and since it was missing the VersionCue.DLL I moved it from the client folder>4.0.0 and when I went back to open Illustrator it worked fine. No I am getting this error message on every right click of my mouse (this started after I downloaded the Adobe Update 4.0.1 to my desktop). I removed those files finally but my right click is still useless. Any thoughts on that one?

Vista Home Premium 64
CS4 Web Premium Upgrade

Photoshop CS4 64-bit crashes looking for 4.0.1 VersionCue.dll after opening a file.

Illustrator CS4 crashes looking for 4.0.1 VersionCue when clicking File menu (can’t even get to file browser)

Auto Update fails to install the five listed updates above – Lang Pack (English) for Device Central 2.1
– Adobe Flash Light 3.1
– Device Central CS4
– Adobe Media Encoder CS4, Exporter 1.01
– Adobe CSI CS4 1.0.1, Adobe Drive CS4 1.0.1, Adobe CSI CS4 x64 1.0.1 – Adobe VersionCue CS4 Server 4.0.1

Manual download and install of VersionCue update fails

Thus,

Two major applications in the CS4 Web Premium suite are non-functional (I haven’t tested the others aside from Flash CS4 Pro… which cannot open my FLASH MX files… >_<)

Apparently this has been going on for over 2 months with no resolution based on the dates in this thread.

A workaround for the AICS4 crash was found by duplicating the 4.0.0 folder for Version Cue. This does not help my copy of Photoshop.

Final resolution to this crash on my system was achieved through a painful uninstall, clean and reinstall process as noted here:

I’ve made a simple setup file that fixes this update glitch…

It has been tested many times and works perfectly.

Unfortunately, the cause of this problem is still under investigation by our engineering team. We’ve not yet been able to reproduce the failures in-house. I have documented how to extract yourself from the situation, and avoid it. Unfortunately, that involves a re-installation. Below is a link to the tech doc.

Note: This tech doc is not live as I type this (2009-02-05, 11:52 PST) but should be by the end of the day.

I have been having the same problem with Vista and CS4. Used Lim Yau Hui patch. It’s no longer crashing when I open a photo. Thanks.

But downloads still fail from Photoshop.

Also tried to install updates via Bridge, that is also failing.

What give Adobe?

Thanks for the info. Re the theory that "the issue is related to some OEM configurations of Windows XP or Vista," you’ll want to abandon that theory. My installation is 100% from scratch from a computer I built myself. Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I’ll be trying your remedy tonight.

The root cause of this issue has finally been identified. This issue, cause, and solution are documented here:

<http://www.adobe.com/go/kb408524>

Please note that if a previous update failed due to the root cause, then it can leave your files in a state which will prevent future updates from working, simply because they don’t find the files in the expected state. In which case, you need to do the complete solution, which involves a clean re-install (sorrry 🙁

Sincerely,
Matthew
