Is it true that raw images from cameras introduced after CS4 such as the Canon D5 MkII will only be supported with CS4 and not with ARC in CS3?

This is hard to believe.

Yes
Upgrade or die…. or at least use the latest DNG converter and edit the DNG files with what ever ACR you have.
For me I have CR4 but I convert to DNG anyway as they are smaller than my camera raw files and there is no "side car" files needed to hold the conversion data. This is important to me as I store my images on a network attached drive, and I would need to move 2 files not just 1 and if the "side car" file is lost then all the changes to the RAW file is lost and must be re-created.
All this and no loss of data.

John,

I am looking forward to buying a Canon 5D in February as I am still using a 10D and it is time to upgrade. I have read many stories about CS4 and am not sure my Windows machine will accommodate it. Also, I am happy with CS3. What program do you use to convert the 5D raw files to DNG which I assume would then be workable in Photoshop CS3.

By the way, thanks for your prompt reply to my first query.

Howard,

You can use DNG-converter (free) to convert your RAWs into DNGs that can be read by older Camera Raw plugins.
