I have found a strange problem with CS4, if I load a file, create a background of a solid colour, and then paste in a masked image, the new image appears OK, and sure enough I can see that it is in the center of the background. if I then try to add a shadow to this top layer, nothing appears?? If I try the same thing in CS3 it works! does anyone know if there is a reason for this, or if I am doing anything wrong? I was wondering if there is a memory issue or if there is a setting somewhere that I need to check out. It does seem to happen only when I am working with some large images, I have though tried loading one of these images and then reduced it to 800 x 800 pixels, but still nothing happens. I really would love to find a working solution if anyone out there can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it…

All I know is that if I create a new image, from scratch, everything default, they do work…

But! If I then say load up one of my large images, and these can be around 128Mb in size (16228 pixels by 17316 pixels by 96 pixels/inch), If I say reduce this to say 1000 by 1000, and then using quick mask, paint a selection, I then save this selection as well (tried not saving as well for the fun of it!). I then make sure that Layer 0 is unlocked and filled with a random colour, I then paste in the selection I have just made to create a new Layer (Layer 1). If I then double click on this layer and select any of the options, drop shadow being the one that I am after… Nothing happens, If I select Colour Overlay for instance, the default is normally a RED that appears over the entire image, not even that appears.

Like I have stated, this normally works fine if I create a file from scratch, but if I am using any of the large images that the client has supplied (saved as JPG’s), nothing happens. I have even tried using them at full res and trying then, zooming in to check if a shadow is appearing, again nowt..

I am sure it is me, but cannot work out why???

Are you zoomed in far enough to see the effect?
Layer Styles previews aren’t that great below 100%.
And the default settings may not even be visible (because they’re too small) on high res documents.

I am working with an image of around 1000 x 1000 pixels, so a shadow effect of 200 pixels should show up, and I cannot see any of the effects…

I have just noticed something that might help! The effects ‘eyeballs’ seems to be greyed out, but when I click on the effect eyeball it dissappears, then when I click again, they go straight to a greyed out eyeball, does this help ??????
