I have just gotten into digial photography. I plan to use my Canon 10D for astrophotography, and also for general use in daytime. I am not particularly interested in graphics or web design. Would you folks still recommend a good general book like the Adobe Classromm in a Book, or would you go with more photo leaning books? Could you recommend a couple of titles?

Thanks….Allen

Try "The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby. Well written in everyday language and has some great time saving tips. Worth every penny.

This book is NOT intended for beginners, as stated in its intro. The number of topics covered are a tiny subset of the full range of PS tools for photography. Almost more techniques are borrowed from other credited contributors instead of the author’s own. The book is laid out very sparsely as if to add more pages and kill more trees.

A much better alternative is PS Artistry.

EISMANN!!! necessary for any PS library. Seminal work.

Also Ben Willmore Photoshop Studio Techniques.
if you can’t find it in your local bookstore, try Amazon or his website digitalmastery.com
More info, pragmatic and common-sense approach, less ego and cutesie crap than….ummm….some others.
Very good book.

The best book, aimed at photographers is, by a long way, Martin Evening’s Adobe Photoshop for Photographers. It’s very readable and will tell you everything you need to know, including how to set up Photoshop to get the best results.

I’d go with Martin Evening’s book too. I’m not a fan of "dummy" and "idiot" books but am no expert either. Evening’s book has a good mix of (heaps of content) intermediate, introductory and experienced advice.

However, I would also say subscribe to a decent digital camera mag and surf, surf, surf. I don’t know of anything that goes so well on the WWW as photography and you can get absoulutely masses of info out there.

It gets my vote too. And the Video guides on the accompanying CD are amazing.

So how long have you been back on the PS NGs Hecate? I’ve just popped back for a look see about CS, and here you are. 🙂

Hi Trevor,

I wondered where you’d got to 🙂

Been back about 8 or 10 weeks.

I have two problems with CS – there’s nothing in it I find particularly interesting except 16 bit and it’s got product activation. Basically, until 7 stops working on whatever OS I have, they’re not getting my money 🙂
