Yes, I had a hard drive crash. My first and I am sure it will not be the last. Problem: my Photoshop was an Upgrade version, I had PS 6 before so I installed and registered my PS 7 without any problems. Now, with a blank hard drive, no previous version installed, the PS 7 Upgrade version does not want to install unless it finds a previous version.
Now what? I am sure I am not the only soul with this dilema. Please suggest solution. Thanks.

George,

It should ask you to insert your Version 6 CD to verify a qualifying product during the install.

You can use the Photoshop 6 cd instead- just select "verify original media" (I think) during the installation, and then just swap the 6 disk for the 7 disk when it gets to that point.

Yes, you must install PS 6, before PS 7.
Try it and let us know.
I have had a similar problem and solved with installation of 6 before PS 7

Sorry that I left a little detail out…
Before PS 6 I used PS 5, PS 6 was an upgrade version, PS 5 is long gone (years and two house moves ago).
I think I will call Adobe for instructions. They have me registered as a user of PS 6 & 7 so there has to be a way do get it installed on a new hard drive. Thanks for the suggestions and if anybody else has one, please post it here. thanks.

It pays to backup.
I found a backup of the Adobe Photoshop folder from last year and managed to copy onto the new hard drive. The PS 7 installed once it recognized the previous version on the hard drive. Thanks for all the suggestions.
Lesson learned: when using "upgrade" versions, it is best to back up the software even if you have the original CD.
