I am trying to mask out the background of a photograph. I was attempting to use a vector mask, but have been extremely unsuccessful in getting it to work. Does anyone know the step-by-step process that I could follow? The original photo is in cmyk mode and the end result needs to be a grayscale photo that can be imported into a Pagemaker document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have masked a gallon jug but now have to mask the hole in the handle. I have tried everything I could think of but with no positive results. Can someone please help me.

Make sure that the Path Tool is set to Exclude overlapping path areas in the Option Bar. Add the path to exclude the area within the handle to the same path that is clipping the background. The settings for how overlapping path areas are handled is in the Option Bar to the right of the Auto Add/Delete checkbox
