Printer-independent Positioning for Labels

Can anyone help with the seemingly simple problem of print positioning for labels?

I’ve created a template for printing disk and case labels. The problem is that whenever I print, the position of the printed image always seems to be relative to the *printer’s printable area* limitations rather than the *position of the labels on the paper.*

I can work around this by tweaking the image layout or the print position, but those adjustments are printer dependent and require me to know the spec’s for every printer that will be used to print labels.

I’m looking for a way to create a template that I can use on any printer, only making adjustments for the particular label type, rather than the printer type.

The key is in how you think about what you’re trying to print. Photoshop isn’t a page layout program so printing CD/DVD cases and labels is a little different. You do not define a page, you define the image. If you define a page for the purposes of layout, you must use guides or some other mechanism so that you have a fair representation of what areas will not print.

No. The information is read for the intended printer and is available under File|Page Setup – the values are grayed out because those are the physical limitations of your printer.

One technique is to put your images on your template, then crop the template before printing.

The truth is, Photoshop isn’t the best solution for template printing. It can be done, I do it every day, but if you want something that you have to think about less, you might be better off with a layout program.
