Grateful to know if it is possible to adjust the strength of a filter – particularly any of the "artistic" filters – as it affects a layer. In some graphics applications you can not only change the mix of the component characteristics of a filter but also the overall strength of it’s application to a layer; I have seen this called "transparency" in some applications and it determines how much of the original image shows through when the filter is applied. Can you do this in PS CS, please? I would like to be able to see how a particular filter at different strengths affects an image. Thanks.

run your filter, then go to edit>fade. you can lower the opacity and change blending modes of the filter.

also works on color adjustments.

Much better way:

Make a copy of the layer you wish to apply the filter to. Apply the filter to that. Then reduce the opacity of that layer, so that th eoriginal shows through a bit.
