Simulating blood on a texture?

I have a texture here: http://holycowchurch.care4free.net/patch.jpg which is of soil, and I want to simulate a pool of blood on it. I’ve tried using the paintbrush tool on ‘color’ mode, but this gives a washed out looking ‘blood’ colour.

Does anyone know a good way to paint blood over a surface that doesn’t require too much technical ability for this newbie?!
