CURSOR SPEED HELP

I wonder if this is a very simply solved problem! I use Photoshop version 6. When using the lasso tool to cut out an image, I zoom in quite close but when I move the cursor off of the page (in order to move along the image line I want to trace) it shoots off very fast. How can I slow the page down to a more manageable speed. Thanks for listening,

One solution is to simply not do that. You could press and hold the space bar and move the canvas instead.
