Don’t know about the trial, but you might want to do a Google.Groups search for the other part of your question, as it has been discussed in the two PS NG’s. Main concern with the upgrade and its value to you, is what do you do with PS? It is really about your using the new features, that can justify the expense. Check out some of the sites that have reviewed CS2, starting with Adobe’s listing of the features. That is the only way to make the decision. If you have any questions about the particular features, you might want to ask about them, prefaced by what you do.

If you are an advance user and frequently shoot 2 pictures of the one scene and later blend them to achieve a contrast range the camera can’t reach… Absolutely essential to upgrade to CS2 for that feature alone.

Don’t do it just to get access to camera files. There are other better, cheaper ways to open 5D canon image than to fork over for an upgrade with essentially the same functionality as CS has.

Install the trial version. It leaves your existing installation alone but be aware, many of your plugins will not work in CS2 without upgrading them too.

Specifications are good to read but
When it comes to judging Digital Cameras…
I’m in the "how do the pictures look" category.

Dunno… there is at least one good freeware program to do that. See: http://gl.ict.usc.edu/HDRShop/

Moving to the CS2 is really worth while, I didn’t have any trouble migrating to the new system, except for a tiny few… like linking layers… It shouldn’t screw your CS installation because it works as a separate program to CS, as per my experience of course.
