had the same issue. All started when I installed a new graphics card, ATI 9800Pro. Try bringing up the gamma then make adjustments using the vid card software. Worked for me

I fixed the problem installing the Catalyst 4.8 Driver!
I have Radeon 9000 graphic card.

You need the HotFix driver from ATI web site. I can’t remember the exact link, but try searching for "gamma hotfix" or something in the site. I’ve a 9600XT and the fix worked just fine.
