Thanks for reply but this isnt the case. The layer itself becomes locked. However, I have just realised that this is down to using a .png image.

In fact having experimented it looks like .png images automatically lock by default. i.e. start with .png and the layer is locked (although the pallet is unlocked) drop another .png (which is also locked by on top, and that is locked and cant be moved.

So, is this all normal?

homebuilt P4 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM

Problem: from time to time, jpegs downloaded from our D100 using Nikon 6.2.1 cannot be unlocked. Clicking on the lock icon does nothing. Adobe’s site and NAPP’s help desk both recommend renaming the background layer to ‘New Layer’ (rarely works), or copying the image into a new layer (sometimes works).

I have found that rebooting the PC usually restores PS to normal. Is this a Nikon camers/software issue, a WinXP memory leak problem, a PS problem, or a combination?
