I’ll start with the specs:

Windows XP
Dell Dimension 2400
768 MB RAM
40G HD -no partitions (I know, I know…)

Photoshop 7
Maximum RAM used by Photoshop (Edit/Preferences) 65%
Cache level 3

Please forgive me if I provide too much information. I’m really at a loss here and I’d like to cover all the bases.

I am having an ongoing issue with Photoshop while working on an image 770×450, RGB Mode. Currently, the image has 22 layers, not many at all, really. Everytime I try to modify a specific text layer (Arial Narrow 12 pt.), I am getting the error:

Could not use the type tool. Not enough memory (RAM)

It happens right after I use the color picker to choose the font color, then clicking the "Move" tool.

I have checked numerous documents and forums to try and optimize Photoshop to ensure an issue like this doesn’t arise, but to no avail.

I have read the entire article located here regarding optimization of Photoshop: <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/12dde.htm>

I have cleared out nearly 100MB of memory on startup and tracked it and at the time of making the change, I have nearly 470 MB RAM available for my system, yet I still get the error.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to why this might be occurring?

You _ARE_using Photoshop 7.01 aren’t you? 7.0 had an issue with type that was fixed with the 7.01 update.

I think what you might be referring to is this:

—————————–
The Type Repair Droplet addresses a data corruption issue identified in files created by Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Under certain circumstances, Photoshop 7.0 can create a text layer that is written incorrectly into a PSD, TIFF, or PDF file. When trying to open a file saved with this kind of text layer, Photoshop will report the following error message: "A problem was encountered reading layer "xxx" because the layer is not a valid text layer. The existing pixel data will be used instead. Continue?"

from the article here:

—————————————-

But I don’t believe that is a factor into my issue with the RAM. I’ll install the fix anyway, but I really don’t think that’s gonna do it.

Thanks for the reply! I’ll keep tryin’. 🙂

save the file. change the memory allocation in prefrences to a lower percentage. start at 50. exit ps and restart. make sure you have enough space on your hard drive. make sure the windows swap file is set to 1.5x or more of your installed ram.
