Fade Image to transparent

Is there any way in Photoshop CS to fade and image to transparent like a gradient. I only seem to be able to apply a gradient on top of an image so the image appears to fade to either the background or foreground color. I want the image to fade to transparent so when the image is place on top of another image it appears to fade into the bottom image. Thanks for your help. My email is

Create a new document containing a transparent background. Bring in your image as a new layer using Copy/Paste. Apply a Layer Mask to the new layer, then use your gradient tool with a pure white/black ramp on the Layer Mask. Experiment until you achieve the effect you’re looking for.

Once you’ve got the concept, you can use the technique to fade images against whatever background you like.
