Making a color transparent

I’m a newbie to Photoshop and I’m using CS on Windows XP.

I’ve tried to figure out how to change a color to transparent but I can’t see how to do it. Its a square around a diamond shape and I want to remove the color in the parts of the square that extend beyond the diamond. Like Paint Bucket but with transparency.

I’m sure I’m missing something obvious…

Basically, you need to select the colour – various ways, but the magic wand may be best. Then delete the selected area.

In PS transparency is an absence of pixels, not the presence of anything.

If you are working on the Background layer, you’ll need to make it "normal" first. Double-click on its name in the palette and accept the dialog.

Lastly, make sure you save in a format that supports transparency. Which one depends upon what you want to do. In any case, not JPEG.
