Version? OS?
Check the FAQs. Either keyboard driver or pirated version of CS come to mind. I have my suspicions, but I’ll keep ’em to myself.
Shawn,
Either:
1: Get rid of the pirated version of PSCS from your computer and buy the real version, or if that isn’t the problem!
2: Download the latest drivers for your keyboard!

There goes that $7 billion.
Folks,
I don’t get it…I did a forum search on Shawn’s name and found no other posting from him although admittedly another alias could be used. So apart from his yelling (use of all capital lettters, Shawn), why are you so quick to imply he is using a pirated version of PS CS? It’s not as if he’s posted multiple times with the same problem and ignored the replies. Reading his simple question I see no verbage to suggest he is using pirated software.
Keep in mind that some people may be relatively new to the forum or to the product itself, and we’ve certainly already borne witness to how many fail to ever first consult the FAQs to see if their problems have been addressed there (Shawn, this is definitely addressed in the FAQs).
If, with no apparent reason, you’re going to imply or suggest that someone is using pirated software, at least give them the courtesy of a more respectful reply where you first suggest their keyboard drivers are at fault. Then, secondly inform them that use of the early activation crack is known also to cause the problem. Better yet, if you can’t keep unwarranted opinions to yourself, simply refer them to the FAQ.
While not the case here, I’ve also seen similar responses to posts where the OP’s question might not have been phrased all that well, yet the reponders don’t appear to notice that maybe the person’s name suggests English may be a second language to them. If you take a moment to notice such details, perhaps again a less haughty response will be provided and you’ll make the person feel a bit more welcome to return should they have other problems.
Remember, those who get help can often (if not now, perhaps later) contribute help as well, provided that they found their experience here a pleasant one.
Cheers,
Daryl
I agree with you Daryl 🙂
A simple link to the appropriate entry in the FAQ would do the trick in most cases.
That’s so true, right shawn ianiri? Hello?
c’mon r_, maybe this person is a pirate and maybe not, but rather that sit in judgement of them, the link back to the FAQ would be sufficient.
My first response in this thread was to Mark Allen’s #2 post. In another thread he had said that Adobe lost $7 billion to piracy; I was responding to that. In #7, however, you got me fair and square. The FAQ sounds a bit accusatory.
Oh, right, the FAQ link:

I hope shawn ianiri will feel comfortable to post a follow-up response.
The FAQ sounds a bit accusatory.
I fully agree r_.
Len, do you think that one of you guys could re-word the FAQ to read that the keyboard drivers could need to be updated and after that mention about the activation crack?
There were a number of legitimate folks affected by the keyboard driver issue and they were not pirates. The FAQ assumes piracy before legitimate issues.
Kudos to ya’ Bob…simple and effective, nothing implied that might be construed as an insult.
Bob,
THANKS! 🙂
grasshopper
o, oops, i searched thing thing and all i could find was stuff about mac keyboard short cuts
Does one need to say any more?

OK,
hands up! maybe i was quick to react. i apologise. however, the angle i’m coming from is one were piracy is on the increase and i jumped to that conclusion. certainly some blame must rest with adobe regarding keyboard malfunction however, although not an admission, i think it’s an excellent piece of reverse engineering and to be applauded.
all hail the ctrl key <

….are you on the loopy juice again?
c’mon… out of every 100 times this question has been asked since CS was released, maybe… MAYbe 5 of the responders had bad keyboards. we never heard back from the rest. Avast and Arrgh!
we never heard back from the rest.
Including Shawn.
maybe his keyboard drivers need updating… 🙂
Oh yeah.That’s probably it.
Actually, Shawn did return, seeing how he spoke of searching the "thing thing". In spite of my earlier post, I also will say that although one’s grammar may be a product of English not being their primary language, or perhaps simply a typo, poorly worded comments particularly when lacking specifics do invite skepticism. Photoshop is a complicated enough application that it requires some degree of intelligence, an amount such that being able to perform a rather trivial search (especially for a topic within the first several of the FAQs) should be a no-brainer. Likewise, I’ve been amazed at those who might ask questions as basic as "Can I copy part of an image and paste it into another?" DUH!! They can talk the talk but not walk the walk, which again would lead one to question if the person even owns the PS user manual and hence the application itself.
Regards,
Daryl
Thanks, Daryl. It expresses some of my sentiments well. Perhaps this is a good time to repost something I saved from another Photoshop forum about 4 years ago. Perhaps not, but I’m gonna do it anyway. The philosophies, though in retrospect not as complete as I’d like them to be, still apply. Perhaps I need to update it, but I’ll wait for an occasion when my blood pressure over the issue is similarly raised as it was when I originally wrote the following.
============================================================ Below, I’d like to repost a short essay I wrote as a reply to a thread in another forum in which a new user of Photoshop asked a question so basic and simple it defied my belief in human curiosity and self-help ingenuity. The replies this fellow got to his question were at times mean, humorous and mocking of his audacity, but I think everyone reacted in their own way to the same feeling they had when they read they question: Simply, that the guy was plain lazy. I post it here not to start a heated debate, even though that’s not a bad thing when those who participate are thoughful in their replies and mindful of the words they choose, but to ask that you would please show some initiative in pursuit of the knowledge you seek. I understand that everyone, myself absolutely included, runs into difficulties when endeavoring to take up a new path of knowledge, and I offer as much encouragement and instruction as I have the time and knowledge for. I am an enthusiastically willing participant in this and other forums, and enjoy helping those who share my passion for computer graphics. But when I run across someone who seems to expect a forum like this to cater to their every whim, instantly, as a long-time user who has spent literally thousands of hours reading, studying and practicing my craft in compter graphics, I feel a little taken advantage of when I’m obliged to answer a very simple question that has gone unacknowledged on a messge board like this one. I don’t want to see someone’s query dismissed as inane if they’ve demonstrated that they’ve tried to find the answer themselves first through commonly-available resources. I don’t consider what I’ve pasted below to be terribly wellwritten, nor is it all inclusive of my attitude, but it may give some people who are not yet familiar with my style of participatition on forums such as this one some insight on why my replies to their questions are sometimes terse, sometimes sarcastic, and sometimes caustic. I have been saddled with these adjectives, but never has anyone accused me of replying without thinking about what I type. If you’ve read this far, and continue to read what is pasted below, I’d be willing to bet you share my passion for learning, and it is you for whom I tip my hat and take the time that I do.
____________________________________________________________ ________________ Start of pasted reply:
Warez version or not, these responses weren’t about criticising him for being a new user. We were all new users at some point, and we all had questions that may have seemed insurmountable at the time. The responses to his simple question were more likely commentary on the fact that he’s lacking even a modicum of curiosity about some of the most fundamental and basic capabilities of the application.
If he’s paid for his copy then it would seem to me that computer graphics is something he’s quite interested in and that passion alone should carry him through learning the basics without asking for help. When anyone who has obviously done their homework and still can’t figure something out there are plenty of visitors here more than willing to help. It’s pretty clear that he hasn’t read more than a few paragraphs on what Photoshop is, what it can do and how it works.
On the other hand, if he has a pirated version and still wants to do graphics it would seem to me that he’s got enough brains to suss a few things out on his own. One needs to be fairly resourceful in order to find out who has the warez, where they’re kept online (or off), install it, run a patch to get it to work etc. One should then take that resourcefulness and curiosity and dig into the application and online help files…and learn some of the basics. Even through all of this it still connotes a bit of laziness and a sense of decayed ethics because getting any software this way is always easier than actually working and saving the money for it. And rather than channeling a passion for learning many people who come to possess their software through illegal means seem to continue that sense of laziness when they decide they are owed answers to these types of basic questions
Do you want answers to your questions? Fine…I can answer just about any question you may have regarding Photoshop, but show me that you’ve at least made some effort on your own. It’s not my job to replace your lack of effort by carrying you through the requirements of what it means to own (in the metaphysical sense) your knowledge. There is nothing to be gained from having everything served to you on a silver platter. The sense of accomplishment one gets from reading, learning and doing cannot be given to you by someone else, and that sense is not something to begrudge because it is difficult, it’s to be cherished for exactly the same reason.

(Here, I’m responding to a new user named Michelle, who was quite upset with the above reply, even though it wasn’t specifically directed toward her) :
Having said all of that, please, ask away if you have questions, but consider the fact that you are likely to be more quickly and thoroughly instructed by reading the manual, using a search engine, or following the tutorials that are available for free to anyone who has even a little bit of motivation.
In the meantime, happy exploring and have fun creating.
Michelle…ignore the following
There have been quite a few times over the past several years where I’ve laid out the same basic diatribe I posted earlier, and I almost always feel a slight twinge of regret for having done so within the confines of some neophyte’s innocent thread.
Other times, though, ranting about the laziness of a new user who has a pirated copy of Photoshop has left me with a sense of relief for having put into perspective for the naif that acquiring Photoshop is not the same as using Photoshop, and to admonish them to understand what it means to invest in one’s knowledge. Built into the directed rant, almost by default, there exists that big fat kernal of raw truth that many more tactful individuals think, but choose not to express for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. I end up taking the heat for being a big, bad, blue meanieto this day there are former newbies who don’t like me very much because I busted their chops early onbut sometimes there are occasions where those sentiments are justified, if not necessary, to cause the light to go on over their heads that, as willing as I, and my peers, are to help where we are needed, that we don’t frequent these forums looking for the opportunity to hold their trembling hands. Yes, I’m often hated for doing this, but more often than not, they start to realise that they, too, must put forth some effort, juiced up by their own motivations and enthusiasm if they want to truly learn the skills they so emphatically implore us to teach them.
Yikes Phos…..
Though I can’t argue with any of it, the whole thing reminds me of a David Letterman-quipped book title, Ike Turner’s "Wimenz Be Tinkin’ Too Much."
Some subjects are worth tearing apart, down to their very molecules, John.
