I want to put some text on an image of a brickwall. I want to make it look like the letters are following the contours of the brick and mortar. Transparency and the Darken in the layer help a little, but I’d love a good way to make the letters themselves deform based on the darkness of the wall behind them, so it looked like they are really on the uneven surface. Any suggestions? I’m using Photoshop 7.0 on the Mac.

Thanks!

Displacment map:

Save out a version of the brick wall as RGB .PSD.

Then with your text layer selected (it has to be rasterized), go to filter>distort>displacment map.

Load the brick wall image. You may have to futz with the % settings to get it right.

the idea behind a displacement map: in areas darker than 128, the image warps ‘down’ or ‘away’. lighter areas warp ‘up’ or towards you. So you may have to finess the brick image a little as well.
