Quits at Initializing after months of no problems

I run Photoshop CS on a 17" Powerbook 1GHz. Almost everyone in my department has been having some degree of problems with it quitting randomly or acting slow on everything from G4 dual processors to iMacs. We’re all running Panther. I’ve been lucky in that my installation seemed stable and all was going well for quite some time. Now Photoshop will quit when the splash screen reaches "initializing…". If I log in and out it will boot up fine.

I do not have the experience to comment on the log into… but bad fonts will often cause programs to quit at the initial splash screen (especially at the part where it reads "initializing fonts").

Do you run a font manager? Have you checked for damaged fonts? Do your co-workers have the same fonts as you? These little, seemingly innocent pieces of software can really be gremlins when left unchecked and unmanaged.

If you run the gamut of font checks and find nothing, then you’ve got whole boatload worth of system inspections to perform (hardware first, then software)… there’s lots of threads about maintenance here and on the net.

Thanks Paul. I haven’t yet tried the usual gamut of troubleshooting as I was hoping (beyond hope) that it would be a known issue I could pinpoint quickly. I will check the font issue and others and report back.
