Pattern Stamp Tool – colors

I just discovered this tool and think it will be very useful but I am confused on using color with it. Under "pattern", I selected "carpet" which is a aqua color. I am working on a black and white photograph that was scanned in RGB. When I use this tool on layer 0 it is gray, when I use it on layer 1, it is aqua. The same thing happens with the one called "water" which is blue. Is it possible to add colors to the patterns and textures? Why is it gray on one layer and a color on another?
