Unable to open images or create new ones

Adobe Photoshop CS Version 8, Windows XP (SP2)

This has been working fine but today I have tried to open existing images or create new ones (File>New) but nothing happens. I don’t get any error messages to say what is wrong and they are not hidden behind any of the toolbars.

Try resetting your preferences per the procedure in the FAQ.

or the faq on missing dialog. sounds like the file> open dialog is off screen.

True. I thought of that, but resetting prefs does that, so I figured <shrug> less typing.
