know that you can draw into a layer mask but is it possible to paste bit map image in to mask?

Of course.

Alt + click on the layer mask – it will open and bahave as any other image ‘frame’

All the usual suspects: copy & paste will cork and associated keyboard shortcuts

Alt + click on the layer mask to exit from it back into full image view
