Bridge: folders disappear during manual sort

Twice now while trying to sort a directory in Bridge a folder of image files has totally disappeared when I try to drag it to the first position in the Thumbnail View. I’ve tried using Windows’ Search function on a file name I know was in the folder, but no files are found. The folder or files also do not appear in the Recycle Bin.

Any ideas on what happened and if there’s any way to recover?
