As "any fule kno" (molesworth) you can produce an elliptical selection out from a given centre point by holding down the Option key. Now I want to make another elliptical selection from another centre point so that both ellipses are selected simultaneously.
You use Shift to add to a selection and Option to subtract from a selection but Option/Shift doesn’t work for a new "centered" selection. Is there any other way to do this other than by using Quick Mask?

Draw your first ellipse and save the selection as an alpha channel. Draw your second ellipse and then Command Shift click on the ‘image icon’ of the saved alpha channel in the channels panel.

• Drag out your first centered ellipse marquee.
• Hold SHIFT and start dragging to add second elliptical marquee. • Keep SHIFT key held and add OPTION key. Your new selection’s center point will jump to the point where you started dragging.

Or…look at the little icons on the left side of Options Bar. It may take some experimentation to get what you want, but you can intersect, add , etc, using them and the key commands still work.
