layer/opacitytransparency question

I am building a multilayer image with a white background. It has a color headshot photo that looks just like it should, that is, superimposed clearly and completely over the background. Another photo however, an image of outer space that is mostly black does not look right. The black edges seem to be somewhat transparent even though that layer is set at 100% opacity. What am I missing? Thanks for your help. I’ll check back for your wise answers in a few days when I get back in town.

Could be that the original image is like that … if its not too much then try either cropping it to remove the edges or paint them in with a soft brush.

Here’s an idea that might work. Try putting a black color fill layer under your image. Might be worth a shot to at least try.
