Not sure about your particular arrangement, but most times you can darken things by creating a duplicate layer and setting that layer to multiply mode, and then adjust the opacity accordingly.

This may not help, but here’s another way to approach it. I usually take autocad drawings in dxf from my engineering department and open them in Illustrator. Then you can set the stroke width as you wish.
