you know how if u have two layers u can do overlay, and all those. Which ones do you think make the best effects, and when I use overlay what is it suppsoed to do?

It really depends on the images you are using. I use Vivid and Hard light alot. If you go to the layers pallette and click on the little box at the top that says Normal you can change the blending mode. When you click on Normal the box will be highlighted and you can scroll through the different modes and see what looks best.

Blend modes control how a layer interacts with the layers below it. It is a very extensive subject. You’ll find some useful information on the subject along with photographic examples in the manual…or the PDF if you don’t have the hard copy.

Edit: Scratch the comment on the manual. Just looked at it again…was thinking about another book. A good book to look at for a simple explanation of how blending modes function is Karen Eismann’s "Photoshop Restoration and Retouching". She gives a much more understandable explanation on blend modes than the User’s manual.
