I did not see this covered in forums, nor in the FAQ– the FAQ pointed to ODBC corruption.

My PE3 failed to initialize for anything:

Editor said Preferences were corrupt or deleted.
I did the ctrl-alt-shift Prefrences reset and it did not help.

Catalog said it was corrupt, did the compact, it said done, it still did not work. Did the new Catalog, did not work.

Quick Edit did the same (same as editor anyway).

My solution: the C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp directory was full. The file dates for over 32,000 Acr???.tmp files was a few days ago, all the same time of day. I suspect these Acr files are acrobat, but I am still investigating.
The Temp folder was unable to create files; I could not even create a new folder there. I went to Run… Cmd and did a DEL *.tmp (which took a minute or two. After this PE3 and all components opened and ran without issue.

I hope this help add another alternate solution to someone who is stuck!

John,

FWIW the references I find to ACR are best summarized by this:

"The ACR-NEMA standard was created to provide a standard way of shipping medical images between different manufacturers equipment."

It’s a graphics file format. Irfanview has a plug in for it.

Very interseting, John, we sure should add that one to the FAQ (Jim, do you copy?)

Robert, I’d guess the ACR files you described would have an .acr extension. The files John found in his temp folder had an .tmp extension and only names beginning with acr … this could be anything.

Alexander.

Alexander,

I missed that. Think I’ll stop my automatic daily clean up of temp files for a while and see if I pick up any "acr" names. Maybe we can zero in on the source. That’s a huge number to be generated in so short a time.

As Alexander mentioned, these are .tmp files. And they are all empty. I will post a few of the actual names. I only had 134 left; using windows to delete them was copying them into Recycle; when I used DOS it tossed all the remaining ones. All of them are empty and within a few minutes. Havent seen any show up since.

Thanks for the additional input; I’ll keep searching for the creator.
