I have a Canon PowerShot S50. I’ve noticed that one of its many options is to take pictures using the RAW option. I usually use jpg and immediately convert them to TIFF. My question is, is there an advantage to the RAW image as opposed to the jpg image ?

MacBook Pro 16” Mockups 🔥

– 48 MacBook Pro 16″ mockups

The RAW image is exactly as it is taken by the camera without compression of any kind. If your camera is set to save in .jpg format then it will compress your pictures before you even download them to your computer.

You’ll find many articles on the Web that answer that question. Here are a few:

Your camera will also sharpen, change colours et al if those are the settings! So the RAW data, as has been stated, is what the camera has "seen" without ANY changes. However like TIFFs they are larger files and that may impact on the speed your camera can take further shots. So if you’re taking action pics jpg may be more practical depending on how fast your camera can "manage" the data. If you are taking portraits or landscapes etc then better to set to non compression.
