Have you tried deleting your preferences as per the Forum FAQs?
Edgar, if you get any answers on this issue I need to know too! My IT department has even spoken on the phone with the Adobe tech department and was unable to get info. that would help. I can not open more then one image at a time in PSD CS3…
To Len Hewitt:
I have not tried but I have uninstalled the hole CS3!!!
I have uninstalled Photoshop and working now with a Photoshop CS3 BETA version, WHICH can open TWO files at a time.
To Tracie:
Cool I am not the only one who has this problem. Maybe there is now more chance that this issue is going to be solved!
Have you tried the solution Len Hewitt told us? I can’t try it right now. You can subscribe to this thread so you get notified by email when somebody posts a response!
I am going to try Len Hewitt’s solution and post here if it worked for me.
I hope we get some feedback from ADOBE this is a critical problem.
Bye
Edgar
Edgar.
My IT guy deleted my preference and it is still crashing when trying to open two files at one time.
This is the error I get;
Adobe Photoshop CS3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.

Let’s pray for help from ADOBE, this is a hugh issue.
Tracie 🙂
I have not tried but I have uninstalled the hole CS3!!!<<
Edgar,
That wouldn’t have deleted your preferences. An uninstall can only remove files created by the installer, and the preference file is created by Photoshop AFTER the installation.
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
As Len says, a complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.
I have uninstalled Photoshop and working now with a Photoshop CS3 BETA version, WHICH can open TWO files at a time.
Was the beta version installed at the same time as the version that you are having problems with?
Tracie and Len: I have uninstalled now the PS CS3 Beta I ran the "WinCS3Clean" app (had also to install "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility") to remove all the preferences, settings, hidden stuff 🙂 and the registry settings. It was successful (removing).
Len and John: I know now about the PS pref file and the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT during startup to delete the file and I tried / did it. The problem is still there it STILL crashes if I open two *.psd files OR one file (which works) and than create a new empty file -> BOOM and it’s dead
Klaas: NO it’s not possible to have them both installed at the same time. I cleaned everything up (with the skript provided by Adobe) and the reinstalled only PS CS3 but it still does not work.
So to sum it up:
– The crash has NOTHING to do with the PS CS3 Beta I had bevor. – The crash has NOTHING to do with the PS settings.
– The crash happens if you open TWO *.psd files
– The crash happens if you open one *.psd file and create afterwards a new empty image (it crashes at the creation: after I press the [OK] button in the "New image" dialog.
– The crash happens if I create an empty image and afterwards a new empty image (you don’t even have to save the first file)
– The crash happens with no matter what file format (tried it with two *.jpg) files
So now I am going to unistall it again and install the BETA version again so I can continue work until somebody has a solution for this.
🙁 Adobe where are you when I need you?
Edgar
Adobe where are you when I need you?
They are on the end of a telephone. This is a user to user forum although we do try to help.
How can you use the beta version? Did you tamper with the system clock?
That could be causing your problems. Otherwise google "ntdll.dll" , you will find lots of fascinating reading, some of which may help.
John: I send them a Bug report. The problem is the input box for the bug description didn’t even allow me to add the crashlog file 🙁 so I could not supply them this important info. Till today I didn’t get ANY response from them! 🙁
I am using an old Beta version. No I didn’t tamper with the system clock? I am happy it still works for me, if not I could not work at all.
I don’t think this crash is a Windows problem. because it crashes ONLY PS. It must be a PS bug!
Edgar
I’ve been experiencing the exact same problem as well. Called Adobe tech support — they told me that it’s a problem with a corrupted Windows User profile. They had me create a new user profile. That seems to have fixed the problem — but only temporarily. I recreated my user profile twice, and Photoshop CS3 worked without a problem — for a day. Then it started with the same problem all over again.
I’m uninstalling my CS3 suite and going back a version until this problem gets fixed 🙁
I also noticed today, that when I experienced this problem again — it happened shortly after I launched Trillian. Are any of you using Trillian also?
Hi Mike
Welcome to the club.
No I don’t use Trillian and I don’t think it has anything to do with that. Can you please try to reboot and NOT launch Trillian and try to create / open two files with PS CS3 and see if it still crashes?
This way we know that it hast nothing to do with Trillian.
Edgar
Edgar,
Tried that already. also tried uninstalling Trillian, wiping out Trillian reg keys, restarting….didn’t help.
It crashes for me, too, when I start a new photo and one is already open. I have Windows XP Pro SP2 and the Adobe Web Premium suite, which has Photoshop Extended.
I wonder if the hardware could be related. I have a Pentium 4 HT processor in a Dell Dimension tower.
Unfortunately, I’m in a corporate environment, so I can’t try too much without bringing in the IT manager. So, for now, back to Fireworks.
Hi Todd
WELCOME
I also work in a corporate environment.
I am working under Windows XP Professional SP 2
on a Dell Optiplex GX7454 Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40 GHz 2 GB RAM
I have also Photoshop Elements installed.
I hope this helps.
Edgar
I as well am on XP SP2 with Photoshop Extended. I’m running an AMD Dual Core processor though.
Hi Mike and Edgar!
Thanks. It seems unlikely that it’s a hardware issue, then, since we’re all running different processors. And I would imagine it’s not Windows XP SP2, since that seems like the ideal environment for Adobe to test things on. Could it be some sort of odd peripheral? I have a converter box to attach an RCA video input to FireWire, but otherwise it’s a typical Windows system.
On a hunch, I tried disconnecting the converter box before starting Photoshop, but no luck.
Hmm…
Hi Todd
I also don’t think this is a hardware issue or Windows XP issue.
I don’t have anything attached to my PC (besides keyboard and mouse 🙂 of course).
How long do we have to wait till somebody from Adobe gives us some feedback? 🙁
Edgar
You could wait a long time here this is a user to user forum.
Did you not read the earlier posts?
I know and I read it, but I also submitted a bug report to them and didn’t get any answer yet.
Edgar
The peripherals I have are Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse, and Wacom Tablet and Epson Perfection Scanner. I read something about conflicts with Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse Driver, but it appears it’s only an issue with CS3 and the 64-bit flavor of XP.
Where can you submit a bug report to Adobe?
You can see the details on your start up screen, I think. Most people don’t have 64-bit OS.
I’m the IT guy and I’m having this same exact problem on 3 machines here. They are all different computer but all WinXP SP2(32bit). Rebuilding the user profiles seems to "fix" it but just like the others it’s only for a short time when some seemly random event causes it to start crashing again. Since it can work under one user profile and not another I’m almost wondering if it has to do with some sort of windows preference or MS Office preference that is inadvertantly affecting CS3. Do you use MS Office? Which version?
I’m using Office 2003, since our corporate e-mail uses Exchange.
While we’re on the subject of weird software settings: Because of one of the web apps I use, I have to use Internet Explorer 6, and I’ve told my computer specifically not to update to IE7. The web app I use will not work correctly under IE7 or Firefox, and the vendor is reluctant to change that, to say the least.
I haven’t disabled Automatic Updates (I can’t), but I have configured my computer to ignore IE7.
Hey Todd, It sounds strangely familiar. We are using Office 2003 as well and I also have programed forms in MS Infopath that will not print correctly with IE 7 installed so I have also blocked IE 7 from being installed on any of the PC’s. The difference is in addition to still using IE 6 we also use Firefox.
Due to the significant changes in Office 2007 we won’t be rolling that out for quite some time, but it may be worth testing to see if it is something with 2003 office.
I have the same problem. I also use office 2003. I have IE7 installed but only use Firefox.
When Photoshop crashed I tried running the VS debugger which said:
Unhandled exception at 0x7c918fea in Photoshop.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000010.
and it highligts this row in the code:
res = _heap_alloc(size);
This tells me absolutely nothing because I’m not a programmer, but maybe someone here has an idea of what’s causing the problem? I have sent this information to Adobe.
Mike L: I have a 32 bit Windows XP
Mike Rudd: I didn’t try to rebuild my profile, I don’t want to loose all my settings 🙁 but if it only fixes the problem for one day it makes no real sense to try it. Could you try to do it again and then to not launch any other program besides Photoshop? This way we can see it it has something to to with other programs or not.
I am also using Office 2003. I don’t think it has something to do with it. I am sure Adobe tested PS with Office 2003.
I have still IE6 installed. And I am using Firefox and Opera too.
Anders: Some pointer is NULL, but it shouldn’t crash at this check!
I don’t get it. I think it has something to do with memory allocation. This is where PS seems to crash.
Edgar
Same problem with CS3
Windows XP Pro 32Bit, IE7 with Office 2007, all patched to current.
Rebuilt user profile and it works for 0-3 days or so with the specific user.
pc is a core 2 duo with 2gb ram, ati graphics card…
seems the IE and office is a moot point, so….
Well, it seems Windows is our only commonality. Is everyone using XP Pro? Maybe more specifically are all these computer part of a domain? Maybe there is some common Group Policies in place?
Main functions of our group policies are:
Enable remote assistance
Set windows update to local server
disable firewall
and Login scripts that map network drives and install network printers.
Maybe something to do with GP, who knows…
PCs are on a domain here…
Some of our main functions of GP are the same
disable firewall
sets local update server
login scripts to do various things
I, too, am on XP Pro on a domain, but I have no idea what my group policies are (or, for that matter, where to find them).
In the "Run" field type gpedit.msc
Be careful what you do!
My specs are XP Pro on a domain, MS Office 2007, IE7, adn Group Policies the same as others mentioned. I also have CS3 installed on a laptop I have running at home and it seems fine ( I haven’t seen Photoshop misbehave here).
Is anyone running dual monitors on the machines that are crashing? I just rebuilt another machine on saturday. Installed all the apps and created the new users profile. Ran CS3 and it worked, ran all the apps and CS3 continued to work. I moved the machine to the graphics guys desk and hooked it up. Only difference was he has dual monitors. after the dual was configured it crashed.
So far being on a domain definitely seems to be the commonality, but as far as what triggers it to start crashing still seems to be… ??
I just have a single widescreen LCD monitor connected with DVI, at a 1680×1050 resolution. I wonder if that connection or resolution could cause the problem.
Tag for resolution. If I open more than two of any types of files and then try to close ONE of them, the whole app crashes.
Filip,
Please let me know if that works for more than a few days. I’ve tried creating a local account on my machine, logging into then, then using PS CS3. It worked for 2 days, then got corrupted again. I’m wondering if the run as is any different.
Mike L.
I created a new Windows user profile and backed up my NTUSER.DAT and ntuser.ini files and when Photoshop started crashing I restored the old files and voila! Photoshop working fine again. I guess now I will try copy protecting the files and see if I can avoid the problem until Adobe releases a fix.
OK, I found the problem: My default printer. If I use any other printer as default than the one I want to use, Photoshop doesn’t crash. Problem-printer: Gestetner MP 4500. Updating the printer drivers did’n fix the problem.
Changing default printer helping any of you?
Anders-
Changing the printer seems to have worked for me. I changed my default printer from a Savin network printer to the Adobe PDF virtual printer, and it seems to work.
I do Web work, so someone who does print work and is having this problem might want to make sure Photoshop can handle higher-resolution photos OK.
Thanks!
Yes! Perfect, I changed the default printer to "Fax" and I can now use Photoshop without a problem. Now I don’t have to logout to use Photoshop (the "Run as" trick is not available under Vista as far as I can see).
I doubt the problem is with specific printer(s) – I’m using a different brand of printer. I suspect the issue is more to do with network printers in general.
Yep, that worked here too… odd…
Bingo! Anders nailed it. If I set the default printer to anything other than a Network printer it works fine.
Just need to report to Adobe so they can try to work on a fix. But in the mean time, its working. Fantastic!
Thanks!
Yep, changing to a non-network printer fixed the problem. Thanks Anders.
Sweet – this fixed my problems too; I set my printer to PDFCreator, which I had installed, and bingo. Nicely diagnosed. Thanks.
It works for me too. Thanks for the workaround Anders 🙂
But Adobe has still to fix this, what if somebody wants to print on a network printer (does he have to create a pdf file first and print that?)
Edgar
At print time you can select the network printer from the file/print menu, just seems it can’t be set as your default.
Confirmed by another – Thanks!
I was beginning to feel that CS3 was unusable.
Is there anyway to change the default printer in just CS3?
Anders, your a life saver. Well done!!!
Worked for me so far.
Thank you so much. Friday was hell and today is much better.
Yep..swapping printers worked for me as well.
Yep I have the same problem.. However it only affects my Dual Xeon machines. My Core 2 Duo machine doesn’t present this error.
This sounds like my problem! I used my HP all in one printer/scanner/copier through CS3 for the first time last night and today CS3 crashes if I try to open a file, either Ctrl+O or File>Open.
What do I do?
So what is the solution? I have the same problem!
I have a dell latitude 820 with Windows XP.
I am working in a network environment(work) and because I print a lot it’s not handy for me to change printers.
Patrick
The solution (in this thread) was to change the default printer in Windows to something else.

OK, I found the problem: My default printer. If I use my Gestetner MP 4500 as default photoshop crashes when I open two files at the same time. Istalling a PS printer driver instead of a PCL6 solved the problem. Other printers using PCL6 work no problem.
Changing default printer/changing printer drivers helping any of you?

A lot of readers replied having success with changing their printer setup.
Hope this helps,
Rob
Rob,
Tnx, but that’s no solution that’s a work around, like I said i can’t change my default printer at work. I need that printer a lot.
There is no Adobe solution yet?
There is no Adobe solution yet?
not since version 6… change the default printer.
Dave,
And what if that is no possibility like in my place because I need the default (network) printer for my work a lot.
I find it very strange for such an expensive package that there is no solution.
Having another printer as default does not mean the other(s) cannot be used!
By the way you need to update to 10.0.01.
John,
I know that but then I have to manually set my printer everytime I print from for ex. Word. And because I hardly print something from Photoshop but a lot from Word I don’t think that is very handy. Do you?
Allready updated to 10.0.01 …
I have to manually set my printer everytime
One extra click in the print dialog? Come on!
I have a laser for documents, an inkjet for graphics and the Generic Postscript printer to speed Photoshop up. It shouldn’t be necessary but then that’s present-day Adobe for you!
I understand patrick, but that’s the way it’s always been. Maybe you can submit a bug report or feature request.
If you don’t print from photoshop that much, how about just switching default printers before opening photoshop? (Yes, just another workaround.)
@John
It looks a small effort but when you print a lot and you have to select the printer from about 40 or so installed (network)printers everytime it’s kind of annoying.
@DAVE
How do you mean thats the way its always been in CS I never had this problem.
@ ALL
Why i didnt’t think of it before is strange, but I installed the network printer I normally use again but now with the PS driver, although I have a couple of settings missing this is for me the best solution for now.
It seems to be working fine …
I too am having similar issues. This is not the first time either. I have Adobe CS2.
Photoshop and Acrobat, fresh install, upon launch one of the errors I am getting is "An error has been detected with a required application library and the product cannot continue.
Please reinstall the application"
You might think that a program costing this much might possibly give you a clue as to the library that it is having a problem with. But this has been typical for me with CS2.
End result is usually a wipe of the hard drive and a complete re-install.
There are old versions (freeware) of a program called Picture Publisher or Corel that may help you through your work until you resolve the issue. Which could take a while. They are not Photoshop but work in a pinch and a company called FOXIT (
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php)builds some nice Acrobat programs that work very well.
I have used these programs more than I would like as a sub for my NON Functioning Adobe software, especially the last time I waded through trying to get Photoshop and Acrobat back up and running when I was under a deadline and did not have time to go through a complete reformat. In the end I did have to reformate my drive and start from scratch.
And don’t hold your breath waiting for help from Adobe. I have had ZERO success getting any kind of an answer from them that actually works and I have been an Adobe user since the Aldus days and trust me, they could care less.
I have the same problem. I open the second file then "Program err…"
I am using CS3. For now I have gone back to CS2. Whats up? Adobe products have gone from reliable to unusable this seems to be a problem across the board.
Anyway I need help with this as well. Running on an Windows XP all service packs and updates install. 2Gig Ram. 138+Gig Fee Hard dive space, also have all CS3 Updates install.
Using photoshop
Version 10.0.1
Thanks in advance.

The "fix"/workaround described in this thread is to go into your printers and set your default printer to a local printer instead of a network printer.
Jim Sheldon –
The problem you describe is different than what others in this thread are experiencing. You may want to start a new thread with that error message. sorry I don’t have any suggestions for you.
-Mike
Mike Rudd,
Thanks for the info. Setting the default printer to a local printer worked. Not very convenient but works.
Kris
Okay. I have CS3, a brand new Dual Core PC. All updates are installed. I tried switching my default printer to Adobe PDF (I only have one printer and it is not on a network, but I changed the default anyway). It didn’t work. All my CS3 apps still crash when I try File>Open or Ctrl+O. Help!
Changing the default printer works for us (10.0.1 on Windows XP SP2 on a HP xw4400).
At the risk of sounding righteous… I’m surprised Adobe didn’t pick up on this while testing the update — and this thread is the only place I’ve found a solution. The crash, and finding a fix, has wasted a lot of our time.
Whatever — thanks for the workaround.
This is driving me nuts!! We are having this problem as well. I’m doing one or two things and hitting save right after to make sure I keep my work as much as I can. It’s happening to a number of machines within the office. All, Windows XP using SP2.
I’ve seen on the internet that some people get this message pertaining to unkown exception occuring in the application at location 0x78138a8c in other CS programs including InDesign as well as Photoshop.
I was thinking it was a software issue but am wondering if it’s hardware now. If any one finds a solution can you post it here?
Thanks,
Z
The reason is that you have a network-printer as your default printer in Windows. Go to Start/Printers… and chooce "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer" as your default printer.
Peter, if that was to me….? I have the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer as default already selected when problems occured.
I just installed CS3 today and it does the same thing. I can open one file at a time (no problems with either file), but if I try to open a second (without closing the first), the program crashes.
well, its march of 2008 – still no visible fix. But, after I changed the printer from a network printer, everything seemed to work fine. Thanks
this is a very serious issue we have 15 CS3 licences and 4 users are experiencing this error. The workaround is not a solution. Forcing each user to select the printer is costing me 5 seconds a job * 5-10 jobs a day * fifteen people over a year is 27-54 hours a year. Do I bill that time to adobe?
5 seconds a job * 5-10 jobs a day *
5×10=50 seconds a day… PER USER?!!! whoa! that’s um, wow. that’s almost a whole minute PER DAY that you monkeys aren’t working!!! i wonder how you stay afloat!
so, how much do you charge you photoshop monkeys per day for sneezing? do you make them reuse tissues? how about pee breaks? you know you can save time if you have the coffee delivered to their desks by a fifth monkey and then have them pee into the cup when they finish.
Do I bill that time to adobe?
sure, bill away.
Hmm, I got the same problem, did you fix it already?
I got a laptop from my work, and I got the same problem you discribed after opening a second window.
did you already solve the problem?
I had a similar problem. I even wiped my computer and reinstalled in case there was some issue/virus. It turned out it was the drivers for my mouse, a Logitech MX310 If you open CS3 psd file and try to open another and switch back and forth is can hang and eventually crash. It also effects CS3 if you open Photoshop and another program such as Dreamweaver or Word in which case you won’t be able to select the windows and move back and forth between files. If you have a mouse that requires drivers uninstall them and plug in a basic mouse, no extra features and see if that works.
Oke… I red the solution.
Local printer installed and problem was solved.
No error occured any more when opening a second window in photoshop CS3.

Thanks.
I know how to stop it at least for us. Change your default printer. I have had the problem in two areas on our campus where if you had a default printer and you changed it to a PDF creator or something else the problem went away.
HP Laserjet 2100 and a RICOH CL7200.
Tahoma was already installed when the problem occurred here. (see Shad Sterling, "Photoshop CS3 crashes on open file" #98, 20 May 2008 10:33 am </webx?14/97> )
raid issue? i think there’s a patch for systems with raid installed. i believe you need to call adobe for it though.
After going through many many messages in this forum I can add that it may have to do with the default printer. We got a brand new ricoh yesterday and it was set to my default printer. Today I started experiencing the crash when trying to open more than one file.
I changed the default printer to PDF and am now able to open more than one file at a time without Photoshop CS3 crashing. We’ll see how long it lasts but the common denominator is the printer.
Good luck everyone!
No RAID here. Also tried turning off "Enable Version Cue", and still had the problem iff the default printer was set to the PCL-6 printer.
So now I just have to decide which is more irritating, changing the printer every time I print or accidentally hosing Photoshop eight times a day . . . but at least we have a way to work around it now! Everyone who helped find this work-around is awesome!
I had tahoma installed but I had to reinstall it and then it worked.
Interesting… What’s the installation source for Tahoma? The version installed here is listed as TrueType, but has the OpenType icon.
I wonder if this is a bug that strikes when you use a particular combination of font and printer driver (tho it still makes no sense that I can print to any printer just fine, as long as one particular printer isn’t the default printer). The printer here is a Ricoh Aficio MP 5500.
We have a Ricoh Aficio MP 3010 . . . apparently Photoshop definitely doesn’t like Ricoh.
Hi Emily,
I have MP 3010 in my office and I use Photoshop as well. Can you tell me what happened? What did you try to do?
Thank you.
I think she set a local printer as her system default rumi… not trying to speak for her, but she doesn’t have many posts on the forum, she might not see your question.
try setting up a local printer as your system default.
Wee: Update your tablet driver.
HI Ihave a G5 power pc running photoshop cs3, problem is it crashes out when i have an image open and move a layer around sometimes it happens after one or two moves or it might occur after anything between 3 – 20 moves error message comes up ‘ Photoshop unexpectedly quit ….etc’ have another g5 that is fine , have swapped in systematic order the memory, the hard drive and the graphics card still no success –

HELP
Is anyone here using a font management program? I use Suitcase for windows and have noticed it hasn’t been opening on startup. I had to open it to install the Tahoma font and Photoshop opened fine. Upon restart however Suitcase did not open and subsequently Photoshop would not open either. I reopened suitcase and Photoshop (and all other CS3 programs)ran fine. Including suitcase in my startup folder seems to have remedied the problem. Does this solution help anyone else?
thanks – Tried just about everything – G5 gone for repair ALAN
UGH! I am new to this. Not new to Photoshop CS3…just new to it not working. We moved to a new building at work and everyone is on a network printer. I am on a PC fully loaded and custom built and used it for nearly 10 months with no problems. Once the network printer was installed,..PROBLEM. My error reads:
AppName: photoshop.exe AppVer: 10.0.1.0 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00018fea
I opened a case with Adobe support to address this. Hopefully they will offer me something so I can post back here. I am frustrated and unable to work in this program. UGH!
switch to a local printer as your system default, like pdf writer.
I also get this message a lot, I think that it’s related to fonts. I usually just reinstall photoshop and it’s fixed.
When using my illustrator or Photoshop the programs crash when I try to open a file. Note– Both worked fine for about five months. Also Illustrator and Photoshop are tied into my Final Cut Pro Suite so I am not sure how to reload the programs.
Just set your default printer to a local printer or a virtual printer such as PDF Writer. We’ve been through this many times, and this seems to be the workaround.
IT Dept.
Hi all,
Having just installed CS3 on a new machine running XP 64 bit I got this problem too.
Setting Adobe PDF as the default printer works, but like others on there, that isn’t what I want/need as I need to set the default printer that I usually print to, to save time in every other App.
The work around I have found is to install the network printer, but as a local printer. It works fine and seems to ‘fool’ PS into thinking its a local printer.
To do this on XP do the following:
Open Control Panel
Open Printers and Faxes
Choose Add a printer
Add a local printer (untick plug and play)
Create a new port
Choose Local Port
Type in \\remotemachine\printershare (i.e. \\server\hp-laserjet)
Select the print driver (click Have disk, then browse to the drivers for your OS, you will need to download these drivers from the manufacturers website first, and normally extract the .exe setup file to a folder where you will fine a .inf file the installer needs)
Enter the name of the printer and finish.
I have setup both the HP LaserJet and the Epson inkjet we have here in the office, which are connected to the server, and they work perfectly – the same as if I added them *as* network printers. Adding them as local printers, albeit with this weird method, stops the photoshop open/new file bug too.
Hope this helps other people too!
Danny
Okay, if I try to open an image in Photoshop from Iphoto, photoshop crashes. I’ve disabled the enable version thing, I’ve disabled the Adobe thing under printer and reset it for my canon. but I can’t go from Iphoto to Photoshop. Any ideas? Kathy
Kathy, I would suggest that you open up a new topic dealing with this specific issue, making clear in the subject line what it’s about.
Photoshop CS3 crashes on Open File
I have found a fix that has been working for me. Here is what I did:
1. Have your IT Manager Logon to your system as Administrator (or logon as Administrator if you can)
2. Create a Local User Account.
3. Make the Local User a Member of the Local Administrators
4. Logon as User
5. Select the Adobe Photoshop CS3 icon in the All Programs flyout menu.
6. Right-click on the Adobe Photoshop CS3 icon and select the Shortcut tab > Advanced.
7. From the Advanced Properties window select Run with different credentials > OK. Apply Changes.
8. When you launch Adobe Photoshop CS3 you will be prompted with a Run As window. Choose the radio button for The following user and choose the Local User Account that you added with the Local Administrator Rights.
The con to this is that when you go to open a file you will not see the network mapped drives. The work around for this is to browse the network using My Network and once you get to the folder where your psd files are select the Favorites icon on the Open window to make it easier to navigate back to the folder(s) where your files are.
I hope this helps some of you with the issues of opening Photoshop CS3 files.
Brad – that sounds like you’ve got a local file/directory permissions problem. Has your IT department tried to lock down your machines in some way (my guess is that they missed)?
nice write up danny. it’s not only xp 64 though. it’s been seen in all oses as far as i can recall.
fair enough, that workaround should work for 32 bit too – we only had the problem on 64 bit machines, the XP 32 never seemed to have it
can someone that has this issue on 32 bit try and and verify the work around works?
it’s been a know workaround almost since cs3 was released… we’ve offered it to people with the problem many times. search this forum for "local printer".
I found a fix from Warren Pearson to speed up Photoshop CS3 when using Vista and a network printer. If your default printer is a network printer, photoshop will take forever to open a file. A work around this is to fool photoshop by adding a local printer with network capabilities. Here’s how: 1) Start the Add printer wizard 2) choose to add a Local printer. 3) Select "Create a New Port" and use the drop down menu to choose "Standard TCP/IP Port". 4) Next type in the IP address of your networked printer–you can find this in your printer’s set up under wireless network information settings. 5) Then choose the brand of printer in the left box and the model in the right box to install a driver. Whala! You installed a network printer that is recognized as a local printer by Vista and Photoshop. Photoshop CS3 will now open files instantly. Thanks to Warren Pearson for this fix.
I did not discover this fix for months and was so frustrated with the lag time of opening jpeg files, I almost stopped using Photoshop altogether.
Good luck!
Yeah, Adobe can’t do much to speed up bad printer drivers (and if they take that long, they’re bad).
I had the exact same problem, but it wasn’t just a network printer. I couldn’t have a Konica Minolta Bizhub set as the default. Any other printer on the network could be set as the default. Once I set it back to the Bishub, Photoshop would close down after opening a second photo.
DId you report that to Konica Minolta so they could fix their driver?
