I can change opacity in Layer Style > Blending Options, and apply Gradient Fills, but how can I apply a gradient to an image that gradually reduces its opacity from a set starting point to a set finishing point to reveal whatever layers are visible under it?

John,

You want a Layer Mask. In the Layers Palette, select the layer you want to fade, then click the New Layer Mask button. When you paint on the Layer Mask, (black and white will be the only available colors), white = opaque and black = transparent. For a gradient fade, apply a black-to-white gradient.

Layer Masks and Knockouts, (a feature found in Layer Styles), are keys to many complex layer effects. Look ’em up, experiment, and have fun.

….or you can use the gradient tool with the tools options set from the foreground color to transparency.
