How can I select a color to be 100% transparent. I want to use the png format. I have done this by select the area to be transparent but this will not do the trick if I have shattered parts inside the image that I also want to be transparent. I am using PS 7 by the way.

thanks

I never use PNG, but doesn’t it use an alpha channel as transparency mask? If that is so, select the color (using Select Color Range or using the Magic Wand) and then choose "Save Selection". That will create an alpha channel of the selection.

Just make the selection and delete it with the delete button. This only works if your background layer is NOT locked and named "background." If it is, You need to double-click on the layer in the layers palette to "make a layer."

Is the area you wish to be transparent currently all the same color? If it is just use the Magic Wand Tool to select this color. If "contiguous" is selected in the options bar, only pixels of that color that are touching each other will be selected. If it is unchecked, ALL pixels of that color will be selected. Be aware of the tolerance level as if it is high, similar colors will be selected too. Reducing the tolerance will limit the color range.

Another way to do this while leaving "contiguous" checked is to SHFT-click on the areas you want to add. You can also switch at any time to other selection tools like the Lasso or Marquee. SHFT-selecting will add to your selection while ALT-selecting will subtract from your selection.
