I’m posting here ’cause I read this forum regularly and I know a few contributor use the Avant browser. The latest version (9.01, built 113) seems to freeze regularly on my system, especially when I have a multitude of web page open at the same time, or when pages contains a lot of Java. Before I give up on it, I want to know if others experience the same or if it’s just on my system and therefore I should look elsewhere for the problem.

I’ll be gratefull for any input.

On the same note, what do you think of the new Mozilla firefox? A worthy replacement for Avant?

Funny, the browser that came with my Win2000 never freezes and I can see every page out there.
Oh, stupid me, it was made by the Evil Gates Empire, how can I use such thing?

Well, Avant use the IE engine, but add a lot of functionalities like popup blocker, robot form filling, a tabbed design, the ability to, on the fly, block or not things like java, flash, pictures, activeX, scripts and the like. It’s a great enhancement, especially when doing specific research and I’ve never experienced problems with it until now.

Martin.

I’ve been using Avant since it made v8. Had the odd problem with it, usually down to badly coded web sites. but never the problems you’ve described. Occasionally it does an app hang, but the features are so useful and the price is out of this world! 😉

As a back up I use Mozilla Firebird which is quick but nowhere near as easy to use as Avant, and tends to hiccup on particular web sites more often (though not enough to stop me using it). (But note that the Mozilla suite is a right PITA, just as bloated, if not more so, than IE for no real benefit. Firebird makes it look stupid).

Opera is now a complete waste of money – it’s as bloated as IE and causes problems on web sites where neither IE, Firebird or Avant have any problems.

Safari is nice if you have a Mac, or so I’m told.

Netscape is….hahahahaha, you cannot be serious….

Actually, Mozilla and Netscape (which is based on Mozilla) have better support for CSS than IE (and IE based browsers), so they make a good testing ground for validity of your code. IE, on the other hand, has such poor CSS support even in the newest incarnation, that it can never show an objective picture of what your page is supposed to look like.

Also, I find Mozilla/Netscape faster than IE, tho Opera is even faster (I’m talking dial-up here).

I’ve reinstalled an older version of Avant that I’ve found on one of my hard drives and it seems to play nice for now. I suspect that my recent testing of a multitude of sequencer/sound management application might have messed up my system, so I’m probably due for a disk wipe.
Thanks.
