Photoshop doesn’t finish loading

Photoshop 7.0 running on Win XP pro. The program has been running fine since it’s initial installation several months ago. Today it stops loading and disappears just after the splash screen loads all brushes. It disappears so fast that I can’t read the actual load step after brushes that it disappears on. All the other Adobe programs that came on the same design collection collection disk load and run fine.

I have: checked for viruses and found none, shutdown and restarted 3 times with no change, ran Norton one button check up which found & fixed a few registry and program errors not related to photoshop, tried to reinstall from the original CD – but the installation process never started (do I have to uninstall photoshop in order to reinstall it? AND if I uninstall it, will I loose any special files (other than completed and saved files)that I may be unaware of?).

Does any know what might be the matter or how to fix it?

Yesterday, I was using both photoshop and InDesign 2.0 to put a document together. Both operated normally and were shut down normally with no hint of any trouble.

This is same problem as reported by Pablo Munos on 29 Jan.

It begins to look more like a bug that waits for something before it acts or a virus that’s date activated.

Dave Milbut and Helen Polson both gave the same recommended actions. Are these two folks Adobe employees tuned to the same script? Sorry folks but you need to look at this a lot closer.

Arnold,

NEITHER Dave nor Helen have ANY connection with Adobe Inc.

The engineers are aware that something is corrupting within the preference files, and are working to determine WHAT exactly is corrupting and why it might be so.

Spurious comments about virus activity is just unhelpful and scare-mongering.

Sorry Arnold, both me and Dave are people who like to hang out at this "User to User" forum and try and help people where we can. Neither of us is in any way connected to Adobe (although I did once go to a Photoshop training course at Adobe UK headquarters, does that count?).

Trashing the preferences file can fix lots of strange Photoshop behaviour, including the disappearing trick which Photoshop 7 sometimes pulls at startup. If you do a search through the forum archives you will find loads and loads of people that have fixed that problem in this way. It’s always almost the first thing to recommend to someone having this sort of trouble. If trashing the prefs doesn’t fix it, that’s when other sorts of trouble shooting come into play.

Ken, if trashing the prefs file doesn’t work, please come back to us ad we’ll see what else we can suggest.

Right. I don’t work for Adobe, but I’ve got some Adobe swag <http://members.aol.com/aikosub4/AdobeSwag/DavesSwag.html>… does that count? 🙂

as for this point. in my experience, most times prefrences are getting corrupted, there’s a pre-existing problem on the disk, or people are not exiting photoshop before shutting down or restarting windows.

regarding your problem in the thread above (where you stepped on someone else’s thread)… glad to have tried to aid you. don’t worry, you won’t have to listen to my attempts to help you anymore, at least if I recognize your name.
