I have absolutely no need for the pixel aspect ratio function in CS but it is forcing itself on me.

Is there a way to disable it or just set the default to square? Every time I open up a scanned image I have to adjust the pixel aspect ratio setting back to square to keep the image from being squished.

Thanks, kemp

The pixels are square. What resolution are you using on your monitor where they are not?

This drives me absolutely crazy too! Please tell me there is a way to turn this off permanently. I do often work in 720×486 with D1 pixel ratio but I do not want to have to manually turn off the pixel aspect ratio adjustment for every single document I ever open in Photoshop.

I have never experienced this problem. All my images start out as square pixels from any of my devices. Of course I can change it once the image has been opened. But, I don’t find a default setting in any preferences.

If you open a "new" document there is an advanced dialogue where you can specify a default pixel aspect ratio. But this does not seem to affect any of my pre-existing images.

Is there something in your scanner that is tagging the image as non square image pixels?

Image – Pixel Aspect Ratio – Reset Pixel Aspect Ratios resets to the default which is square (search for Pixel Aspect Ratio in Help). It doesn’t affect existing images. I don’t know if this solves the problem of the original post.

My monitor is set to 1280×1024, same as it has always been. I have tried using "Reset Pixel Aspect Ratios" with no change. I have also tried setting up a new "pixel Aspect Ratio" that is square and it will not default to this. I have tried deleting all of the pixel aspect ratio options. Nothing changes.

The scanner is not an in house scanner. It is likely an OCE large format scanner at the print shop that produces the images that are opening compressed 50% in width.

So I guess it is possible that the scanner is embedding some data into the tif file that maked photoshop open it this way, but how do I make it open the thing with square pixels!

Thanks for the replies!
