I have a two layered photograph with the upper layer being a face copied and pasted above the bottom or backround layer.

As the flesh tones differ, I added an adjustment layer above both. I now discover any color balance or other adjustments effect both layers. Is there a manner by which I can adjust only the upper layer and leave the backround layer unchanged?

One wayis to create a selection from the upper layer, then create the adjustment layer; it will be masked to affect only the selected area.

In addition to Tacit’s advice you can group the two layers by Alt-clicking on the line between the layers. Another way is to put them in a Layer Set together and set its Blending Mode to Normal instead of the default Pass Through. There are tines and places when one or another of these techniques is most useful.
