I’ve noticed that files ranked numerically or alphabetized in their folders seem to be randomly placed on the CONTACT SHEET. Is that due to physical photo size difference placement?

Is there any way to retain the numerical ranking or alphabetizing status of the photographic filing system on the CONTACT SHEET … instead of having them placed randomly?

Thanks!

well, i can’t give as much help as i’d like to – i don’t use the mac so any specifics will aply to windows machines – most should cross over to the mac but not all. some of this is opsys dependant. PS uses an opsys call to find the file names in a folder (in windows it’s ‘findfirst’ and ‘findnext’) if the file is an image file it’ll process that than get the next name ect. part of the trouble is in how ‘alphabetizing is done – in the basic character set used ( ascii ) ‘a’ and ‘A’ are not the same. also shearches for a name ( this is likely windows specific) shearchs for a given extention first, once it’s found all files with that extention it’ll look for the next so it may place all jpegs then all tiffs then all psd ect. PS also has a little trouble with numbers – ‘X01’ is after ‘X010’.

I have a workaroud for a similar problem. I often wind up with many variations of a product shot. When the numbering gets to 10 Contact Sheet will place that ahead of image number 9. So I get contact sheets that are way out of sequence. What I do is deselect Flatten all layers and then I reorder all the shots as needed.

It’s due to the way operating systems and software use numbers. The easiest solution is to use the naming convention where you put a zero before single digit numbers. I.e. 01, 02, 03…etc.
